At No. 1 doubles, the Chargers' duo of junior Kyle Williams and soph- omore Quinton Sorgius lost to the Jeeps' team of senior Alex Harder and Reece Bauer 6 -0, 6 -1. At No. 2 doubles, Char- gers sophomores Colin Craig and Andrew Clar- idge lost to the Jeeps' team of sophomore Luke Harder and freshman Lane Knies 7-5, 6 -2. In a junior varsity sin- gles match, Chargers freshman Ethan Huck defeated the Jeeps' Ross The Pike Central High School girls' golf team finished second in a three- team match hosted by Gibson Southern on Monday, Aug. 14, at the Cambridge Golf Course in Evansville. Junior Natalie Bohnert led the Lady Chargers with a 12-over-par 48, while senior Morgan DeWeese shot a ca- reer-best 13-over-par 49. Senior Natalie Burkhart shot a 14-over-par 50, senior Mackenzie De- Weese fired a 17-over-par 53, and soph- omore Hadley Holder had a 26 -over-par 62. As a team, Gibson Southern placed first with a score of 190, while Pike Cen- tral was second with a score of 200. South Spencer, meanwhile, finished third with a score of 226. "The course and match was played in a much different way than we are used to," Lady Chargers head coach Jarrod Gideon said. "We played the back tees and played the ball down. This was the first time I remember doing this in 12 years of coaching girls' golf, so it was a challenging test." However, Gideon noted, the team score of 200 put up by the Lady Char- gers was still a 13-stroke improvement they shot at the Cambridge Golf Course last season. "We are still working toward team consistency," Gideon said. "We hope to hit our stride by PAC." With the second-place finish, Pike Central slipped to 5 -1 – including 2- 1 against Pocket Athletic Conference foes – in dual and tri-meets this season. On Saturday, Aug. 12, the Lady Char- gers finished eighth out of 12 teams in the Washington Invitational at the Country Oaks Golf Course in Mont- gomery. Bohnert shot a 13-over-par 85, Bur- khart had an 18 -over-par 90, Mackenzie DeWeese fired a 31-over-par 103, Hold- er shot a 40 -over-par 112 and Morgan DeWeese had a 42-over-par 114, as Pike Central shot a team score of 390. "We had a difficult day, and didn't play our best," Gideon said. "I think we just got tired on the back nine. If you look at our nine-hole totals, the front nine we played really well, while on the back nine, our scores as a team real- ly dropped off. If we take away the big numbers, our scores would have been much better." "We have to learn to sometimes ac- cept that a bogey is okay and move on and avoid double-, triple- and quad-bo- gies," Gideon added. "We will keep working on course management and I think our 18 -hole totals will be a lot bet- ter by the end of the season." On Thursday, Aug. 10, Pike Central placed first in a three-team meet played at the Country Club of Old Vincennes. Bohnert led the Lady Chargers with a 6 -over-par 42, Burkhart fired a 9 -over-par 45, Makenzie DeWeese had a 13-over-par 49 and Holder shot a 16 -over-par 52. As a team, Pike Central had a team score of 188. North Knox placed second with a team score of 205, while South Knox placed third with a team score of 240. "We were more consistent as a team," Gideon said. "We aren't playing as well as we are capable of, but I think we are getting closer each match." Pike Central, which played – along with Southridge – in a three-team meet hosted by Heritage Hills at the Christ- mas Lake Golf Course in Santa Claus on Tuesday, Aug. 15, will take on Vin- cennes Lincoln and Washington on Thursday, Aug. 17, at the Country Oaks Golf Course in Montgomery. The Lady Chargers will then bat- tle North Knox in a dual meet sched- uled to be held on Monday, Aug. 21, at the Bicknell Country Club, before re- turning to the Country Club of Old Vin- cennes on Tuesday, Aug. 22, to take on South Knox and Wood Memorial. The Pike Central High School boys' soccer junior varsity team split a pair of matches during a round-rob- in tournament hosted by the Chargers at the Gospel Cen- ter on Saturday, Aug. 12. In the first match, Pike Central finished regulation tied 0 -0 with Evansville Har- rison. A fter both teams re- mained tied after the first round of penalty kicks, the Chargers lost in the second round of PKs. "Noah Whann played very well all game in goal," Pike Central head varsity coach Chad Western said. "An- drew Clark and Jersey Mills were very strong all day on defense, along with Jaden Montgomery, Gabe Cald- well and Austin Dixon. We just needed to put a goal or two away and could not." In the second game, the Chargers defeated South- ridge 4-0. Scoring goals for Pike Central were Carson John- son, Jacob Barber, Hunter Capehart and Connor Young. Whann, Garrett Boyd, Cape- hart and Braden Furman had assists. "Our goalies were very good the whole time with Whann, Young and Sammy Ballard doing the job well," Western said. "The defense played well again, getting a shutout. And our middle and offense created some oppor- tunities by Braden Furman, Connor Gaines, Reece Ash- ley and Alfredo Stewart get- ting the ball forward for our scores." The Pike Central High School football team tuned up for the start of the 2017 season – which gets underway on Friday, Aug. 18, at Evansville Bosse – with a scrimmage at Wood Memorial on Friday, Aug. 11. The Chargers dominated the Trojans both of- fensively and defensively, scoring a total of nine touchdowns – including two each by junior defen- sive back/wide receiver Randy Powell and soph- omore linebacker/running back Mario Fields – while allowing just one. "I think we did really great as a team," said senior defensive back/wide receiver Adam Wilkison, who gained 58 yards on two carries, including a 42-yard scoring scamper. "Every- body was doing their job. Everyone did exactly what they were supposed to do, exactly how they were supposed to do it. It just led us to success, and if we keep that up, there's nothing but great PCHS boys' soccer JV finishes 1-1 in round-robin tourney PCHS girls' golf team places second in meet with Gibson Southern, South Spencer CHARGERS DOMINATE IN SCRIMMAGE AT WOOD MEMORIAL Pike Central High School senior linebacker/offensive lineman Jake Sisk (51) makes a tackle as senior defensive lineman/offensive lineman Tyce Sorgius (62) looks on during a varsity football scrimmage at Wood Memorial on Friday, Aug. 11.
