JOIN US FOR A "TAIL-WAGGING" TIME! DOG SHOW Amber Manor Health Campus THURSDAY, AUGUST 24 TH 6:00 P.M. JOIN US FOR A "TAIL-WAGGING" TIME! First day of school by the numbers By Ed Cahill The Pike County School Corporation began the 2017-18 school year on Wednesday, Aug. 9, with a student enrollment of 1,904, according to figures released by PCSC Superin- tendent of Schools Suzanne Blake. Last year, the Pike Coun- ty School Corporation be- gan the year with an offi- cial student enrollment of 1,944 students, a figure that fell to 1,782 after stu- dents who had transferred to out-of-county schools or moved out of state had been accounted for. However, by the end of the 2016 -17 school year, the official enrollment for the school corporation had increased to 1,906. "It's not uncommon for the enrollment numbers to drop between the first day of school and Septem- ber, when the ADM count is submitted to the state," Blake said. "So we ex- pect to see some adjust- ment during the next few weeks." "In the past, our enroll- ment has declined during the spring semester," Blake added. "During the 2016 - 17 school year, we experi- enced an increase in stu- dent enrollment through- out the entire year." Petersburg Elementa- ry School began the 2017- 18 school year with an en- rollment of 510 students – an increase of 54 students from the school's official student enrollment on the first day of the 2016 -17 school year. PES ended the 2016 -17 school year with an official enrollment of 520 students. Winslow Elementary School began the 2017-18 school year with an en- rollment of 343 students – an increase of 31 stu- dents from the school's of- ficial student enrollment on the first day of the 2016 -17 school year. WES ended the 2016 -17 school year with an official enrollment of 348 students. Pike Central Middle School began the 2017- 18 school year with a en- rollment of 417 students – an increase of 16 from the school's official enrollment on the first day of the 2016 - 17 school year. PCMS ended the 2016 -17 school year with an official enrollment of 418 students. Pike Central High School began the 2017-18 school year with an en- rollment of 634 students – an increase of 21 stu- dents from the school's of- ficial student enrollment on the first day of the 2016 -17 school year. PCHS ended the 2016 -17 school year with an official enrollment of 620 students. Blake added that 17 stu- dents who were formerly enrolled at Petersburg El- ementary School and 18 students who were former- ly enrolled at Winslow Ele- mentary School have trans- ferred to the newly opened charter school, Otwell Mill- er Academy, which held its first day of classes on Mon- day, Aug. 14. GLEZEN G.B. CHURCH Corner of Center and Sycamore Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10 :30 a.m.; Wednesday Bible study at 6:30 p.m. Remember those on our prayer list, the shut-ins and our lost loved ones. Jesus never gives up on people. He doesn't want us to give up on them ei- ther. He promises that He can change anyone's heart, even ones that seem hard- ened against the truth of the gospel and wants us to continue reaching out to those we might consid- er unreachable. We can be instruments of God's love by responding to everyone with grace and then being patient as we wait for God to work in their hearts. "Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, 'Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who ap- peared to you on the road as you were coming here— has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit'" (Acts 9:17, NIV ).
