Historic first day for Otwell Miller Academy By James Capozella On Monday, Aug. 14, Otwell and the Jefferson Township Community en- joyed its first day of school since Ot- well Elementary School was closed by the Pike County School Corporation's board of school trustees at the end of the 2015 -2016 school year. Otwell Miller Academy (OMA) di- rector Rick Fears is "looking for a few more to enroll" at the school follow- ing the August 14 opening day, where classe sizes ranged from six students to 15 for grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Fears told both groups of students before going to their classrooms at the Otwell United Methodist Church and Otwell Wesleyan Church that "we should be moving into the new build- ing in a few days, but for now we" will have school in classrooms made avail- able by the two churches. He told students that they were en- rolled in Otwell Miller Academy and that the entire staff is "excited about the opening and the fact that an ele- mentary school is back at Otwell." "A lot of people have put forth a great effort over a year and a half" to make the school happen, he added. He said that he couldn't say enough for the friends, board and others that have spent a great deal of time and energy to get the school to the opening day. Opening day enrollment stood at 59 for kindergarten through fifth grade, according to Fears. Many students were dropped off at the two churches by their parents, Fears noted. "We are doing well with no transportation prob- lems," he said. Traffic was controlled by the Pike County Sheriff's Depart- ment at the Methodist Church, while staff members Bob Rhodes, Rose- mary Rhodes, Josh Byrd and Jenny Byrd helped parents and students en- ter the Wesleyan Church Fellowship Hall for the kindergarten through sec- ond grade classes. Fears said the OMA building is com- plete with plumbing and electrical, in- cluding drywall, and is awaiting the completion of a concrete sidewalk re- quired by the state fire marshal for fire drill use. All plumbing fixtures are in place now and Fears hopes the facility will be open in a week or so for kindergarten through fifth grades, plus a nursery. Otwell Miller Academy (OMA) kindergarten teacher Mrs. McCandless had her first day of class in the Otwell Wesleyan Church Fellowship Hall this past Monday. McCandless has 10 students in her class and will probably be moved to the new Otwell Miller Academy building within a week or so, according to OMA Director Rick Fears. Twenty-eight students in grades three through five listened as OMA Director Rick Fears greeted them on their first day of school. He told them the school name and how it came about after the Otwell Elementary School closing at the end of the 2015-16 school year. James Capozella photo Petersburg Garden Club The Petersburg Garden Club met and Carol Sargeant, from Great Britain, showed the club how to brew a proper British tea with loose leaf tea and she also made English scones with clod- ded cream for the ladies.
