Ed Cahill photo Strong Lady Charger contingent looking to build on success By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central girls' golf has been build- ing toward this year for a couple of sea- sons. Senior Natalie Burkhart is a three- time All PAC golfer and holds the school record for low score. She is one of four se- niors and leads a strong Charger contingent that was runner-up in the PAC last year as we as advanced to the regional for the first time since 2008. "We have high hopes for this year. This should be a really good year, if we can get some consistency with the girls who have less experience," said Charger Coach Jar- ed Gideon. "We expect her to be All Conference again," said Gideon. She has the school re- cord and we expect her to shoot even bet- ter scores this year. She has matured a lot and doesn't get as upset this year." He added, "She is a good ball striker and hits it really far. Doesn't really have any weaknesses in her game. When her putter gets hot should could go really low." Junior Natalie Bohnert is also a return- ing All PAC player. "She could easily shoot that," said Gideon of the school record score of 39 for nine holes. "They will really push each other. I ex- pect both of them to shoot in the 30s sever- al times this year." "Natalie has a natural swing and is just a good natural athlete." She qualified for the state swim meeting bother he freshman and sophomore years and holds numerous swim records for Pike Central. Senior twin sisters Mackenzie and Mor- gan DeWeese are solid players for Gideon. Mackenzie is a four-year starter. "She hits it a long way. If she can be more con- sistent with her drivers she can go low. We are looking for her to be more consistently in the 40s this year," said Gideon. Morgan played on the varsity last year but won't every match. "She is going to be asked to play more varsity matches this year. She has improved and we are expecting her to score for us." Jalah Barnes is a senior, but is recovering from ACL surgery. Right now she is riding in a cart in practice. "She has a good swing. It is her first year to play golf, but she hits the ball well." Sophomore Hadley Holder started play- ing golf this summer and has been on the course a lot during the summer. "She is young and getting better. She has a lot of potential." "We know Natalie and Natalie will be in the 30s or low 40s. We want two more girls to be in the mid-40s or some where around 50. If we can do that consistently we will be hard to beat," said Gideon. "We closed the gap last year with Gib- son Southern. They didn't blow us out in the PAC. They have lost some players and we have narrowed that gap this year," said Gideon. Gibson Southern's girls have been the standard in the conference for several years. They won four straight PACs. "We can shoot better scores this year. We want to compete for the top spot in the conference and play well again in the sec- tional. If we compete well we can get out of the sectional again," said Gideon.
