Senior linebacker/of- fensive lineman Jake Sisk – who had one quarterback sack and forced one fumble – agreed. "We did great," Sisk said. "We stayed behind each other, stayed togeth- er as a family. If we do that, nothing's going to stop us." Starting the scrimmage by running 16 plays start- ing at its own 35 -yard line, Pike Central picked up five first downs while scor- ing three touchdowns, on Wilkison's 42-yard run, a 12-yard run by senior line- backer/quarterback Chris- tian Alvey and a 32-yard run by sophomore defen- sive back/wide receiver Connor O'Neal. A fter the two teams switched sides, Wood Me- morial was able to only pick up one first down while be- ing held scoreless. "We kind of ran our nick- el blitz package there for most of the game, just re- ally to get guys moving, get them flying around," first- year Chargers head coach Erik Mattingly said. "And they looked pretty good." During the second half of the scrimmage, Pike Central – starting at the Trojans' 10 -yard line – ran nine plays, scoring on six – on a one-yard run by se- nior defensive back/wide receiver Clint Boger, a 10 -yard run by Powell, a 10 -yard pass from Alvey to Fields, a 10 -yard run by se- nior defensive back/wide receiver Brandon Long, a 10 -yard pass from Alvey to Powell, and a nine-yard run by Boger. The Trojans, mean- while, managed to score only once, on a seven-yard run, when their offense re- turned to the field. "We did fine," Matting- ly said afterward. "We did what we were supposed to do. It's always good to see somebody else. ( Wood Me- morial) is doing alright. I mean, they got dealt a hand that no one's faced, no one knows how to deal with what they're dealing with. I think it was positive for both teams. And the bot- tom line is everybody came away healthy and feel- ing halfway good about it, and that's the best you can say for a scrimmage. It's a scrimmage." "There's a lot of work to do ahead, but it's a step," Mattingly added. "It's an- other step in the right way." "We're just going to get stronger," Sisk said. "We'll work on tiny adjustments here and there for differ- ent teams but, like I said, if we stay together, noth- ing's stopping us." The Chargers will travel to Evansville Bosse on Fri- day, Aug. 18. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m., Eastern time. Last season, Pike Cen- tral defeated Evansville Bosse 21-0, the first loss in a winless season for the Bulldogs. "You go from scrim- maging against no speed to playing against one of the fastest teams in the ar- ea, so there's going to be a pretty sharp learning curve there, those first couple of plays on defense for sure," Mattingly said. "I know Bosse struggled last year but, man, they've got some dudes that can fly. So we'll have to find a way to contain them. I'm sure they're wanting to come out strong after last sea- son and send a message with the game."
