Chargers get epic win over Heritage Hills By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports Sports@PressDispatch.net Pike Central picked up one of their biggest wins of the season with a 72- 70 triple overtime win. "It was crazy. It was just, well here we go again," said Charger senior guard Brayden Howald of the triple overtime win. "That game was so fun," said Char- ger junior guard Quade Morton. It should have been fun for Mor- ton. He scored 31 points including a long range three-pointer at the buzz- er of the second overtime. Then in the third overtime he knocked down a jumper over Heritage Hill's 6'8" Trent Sisley, who has offers from the likes of Indiana, Purdue and Michigan State. Morton's shot went through the net with 1.6 seconds left in the third overtime and was final- ly enough for the Chargers to win. Heritage Hills managed to get a floor length pass to Sisley and he took a rushed shot that missed, giv- ing the Chargers an epic win. "It was a really big win for us," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. "It was definitely a team effort but the job Peyton did on Sisley was phe- nomenal. He did a really good job on Sisley and we did a good job of limit- ing everyone else. No matter what we do, he is going to score a lot of points, because he is so good and they go to him nearly every trip down the floor," said Elliott. Elliott said going in, the Chargers knew it was going to be a battle with a lot of implications in the confer- ence. Elliott said he told the Char- gers, "They may have Sisley, but we have the second, third, fourth and fifth best players on the floor." The game was a battle from the start. Colten Hopf scored eight first quarter points for the Patriots to put them up 15 -10 at the end of the first quarter. Pike Central fought back in the second quarter, scoring 17 in- cluding six from Morton, five from Peyton Howald and four from Julian Gish to make it 30 -27 at the half. Sisley had nine points in the third quarter for the Patriots and Marcus Becher hit two threes as the Patri- ots pulled away to a 49 -40 lead after three quarters. Pike Central's defense then kicked in. The Chargers held Heritage Hills to just two free throws in the fourth while they got points from five play- ers to tie the game and take it into overtime. Elliott said he thought it was just a matter of the Chargers' experience and resiliency that they were able to get back into the game in the fourth quarter. In the first overtime, Sisley hit a layup with four seconds left to tie the game. Morton got a near-half court shot off, but missed. In the second overtime Pike Central appeared to be in big trou- ble, but Morton drilled a bank shot three-pointer at the buzzer from way behind the three point line. In the third overtime, the two teams traded baskets through the first few minutes, but with about 40 seconds left, Pike Central had the ball and held it. Eventually Morton drilled a jumper over Sisley with 1.6 seconds left and Pike Central im- proved to 7-3 on the year. While Morton had a big night for the Chargers, he got lots of support. Gish had 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Peyton Howald had 13 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals. The girls moved from a 36 -25 deficit to a 40 - 40 tie with just one minute left. Anna Whitehead sent Lady Wolverine Hannah Rogers for one of two but then after a Pike Central time out, Mills nailed a basket for a one point lead with 37 seconds remaining. Mills forced a jump ball with 10.7 seconds on the clock and then changed the arrow back for a Char- ger possession three seconds later Lady Charger Anna White- head accounted for two bas- kets in the fourth quarter of the White River Valley win. Morton goes off for 17 in 3rd as Chargers beat Wood 49-34 By Andy Heuring Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central boys varsity basketball team picked up their eighth win of the season with a hard fought victory over the Wood Memorial Trojans 49 -34. It was anything but easy and took an offensive explosion of 17 points in the third quarter by Quade Morton to pull away from the Trojans. Pike Central jumped out to a 5 -0 lead on a three by Peyton Howald but three minutes later the Tro- jans tied it with a free throw by Wood's Gavin Bigham to make it five apiece. Morton, who had a 60 -point weekend, hit Giles Mason for a bucket in the paint. Gish hit a three pointer and Morton scored on a drive at the 4:45 mark of the second quarter, hustling Pike Cen- tral to a 15 -6 lead. Wood gathered some momen- tum and Gavin Bingham got a put- back basket in the paint for the Trojans to make it 15 -11. Morton then hit a free throw with 1.9 seconds left and Pike Central went into the locker room with a 16 -11 lead. Wood mounted a comeback in the second half. Wood's Alton Falls helped the Trojans get back into the game.
