I started out doing sever- al Nicole Wilkins Challenges that helped me learn how to do proper nutrition and learn dif- ferent types of gym workouts." A fter watching her son go through competitions, she saw how difficult it was both physically and mentally. Mill- er wanted to better under- stand what her son was go- ing through. A fter going to the competitions, she want- ed to become more physical- ly fit and change her lifestyle. "I asked Derek to coach me because he obviously knows what to do," Miller said. "He agreed but just could not be as tough on me as I needed." In 2019 she found her coach, Steve Poynter on social media. She informed her coach that she wanted to look good for the Olympia. Her coach start- ed her on a plan they called "Mr. Olympia Mom Prep." "A fter seeing the changes that were happening, Derek encouraged me to step it up and consider competing in a show myself," Miller said. "I messaged Aaron Stephens and said, "I am looking for someone to help push me in the gym and make sure I am doing my movements correct- ly. Don't laugh, but I would like to do a local figure show this summer, so I need a big push." He agreed and has been work- ing with me ever since." Mill- er added "in 2020 after going through gym lock down with Covid, I did step on the stage for my first and only figure competition in Tampa, Flori- da. I have to admit, there were several parts of my body that were not stage "worthy" but I did it! It was so much fun. But to be honest, I was not near at the level of competition as Derek, so I still cannot fathom what he goes through mental- ly and physically preparing for a contest." She is still working with her coach and Stephens is still helping her at the Zone. In the last nine months she has made a new friend and had another friend join her with working out. "It is help- ful to have accountability part- ners and encouraging to see each other grow mentally and physically," said Miller. Lunsford shares his faith in all his interviews, YouTube videos and while talking with fans. According to Miller he enjoys talking with fans and a lot of them love to talk about faith. He has stated that God gave him the talents and ge- netics to be a great bodybuild- er as a platform so he could fulfill his purpose in sharing Christ with others. "I am ex- tremely proud of him and not just because of his wins on the stage but more importantly his wins in life," Miller said. "He has grown so much phys- ically, mentally, and spiritually since he started his career in bodybuilding. I know his goal was to win the 212 Mr. Olym- pia and he did that in 2021. As a mother, I love and want to see him dream and reach his goals. I think that is every par- ent's desire, to see their chil- dren succeed." Miller added "And to get second place in the Men's Open Mr. Olympia his first year is just mind blow- ing. But what is more impres- sive is to see who he has be- come as a person. Derek has been through some struggles in life and came out a better person because he now knows his purpose. I am so proud of how bold he is in sharing his faith and love for Christ." Lunsford met his wife, Jhe- lsin, on Facebook when they were 17, and they have been to- gether ever since. "She fell in love with him for his muscles when he weighed 130 pounds," Miller said. "Thank goodness because now he weighs in at more than 230 with a lot more muscles." Their first wed- ding anniversary will be this March. Jhelsin has compet- ed and won shows in the past. She just earned her doctorate in physical therapy and is al- so into fitness coaching. She can be found on Instagram @ fitwithjhel. In fact, one of the couple's hobbies is making funny TikTok videos; which can be found on her TikTok jhelbell_ or Instagram @jhe- lbell. Lunsford will not be com- peting again until the 2023 Mr. Olympia which will be this November, in Orlando, Flori- da. He plans on traveling all over the country this year, as he has several guest appear- ances lined up.
