Walls, administrator of the State Department of Public Welfare, announced Findings of the study will be used to es- tablish a registry of the phys- ically handicapped and will serve as a basis for planning by the Indiana Commission for Physically Handicapped Children as established by the 1947 legislature. Salem P. Hammond of Pe- tersburg, was presented with a gold pin signifying that he had been a member of the Pike Lodge No. 121, F. & A. M. for fifty years. Mr. Ham- mond, who is in his 94th year has been a member for 54 year, since 1894. Pike County high school principals have been notified by William H. Strain, Indiana University admissions officer, that the University for the first time since the war will be able to accept and house all quali- fied unmarried students desir- ing to enroll for the semester. Deaths: Rosa M. Johnson, 88, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lelah Jack- son, of St. Louis, Mo., life long friend of Mrs. Hattie Gullick; Samuel J. Morton 71, native of Winslow, died in Princeton, a Southern Railroad black- smith; Emma Beasley, 80, widowed, was found frozen to death at her home; George Al- len Jenne, eleven months old, died Sunday in Petersburg. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, Jan. 17, 1963 Miss Judy Williams, daugh- ter of Rev. and Mrs. Walter Williams has been selected for Who's Who Among Stu- dents in American Universi- ties and Colleges. Judy is a senior in nursing at Evansville College. In making this selec- tion consideration is given to the student's scholarship, participation and leadership in academic and extra cur- ricular activities, citizenship and service to the school, and promise of future usefulness. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Jan. 18, 1973 Lester Cox of the Holiday Home, Petersburg, received a Christmas card from Presi- dent and Mrs. Nixon. Cox had previously sent a poem to the White House and President Nixon had sent him a letter of recognition of the poem, praising him for his interest in his hobby of writing and his interest in political affairs of today.
