Gish stepped into the passing lane and streaked to the other end for a layup. On the next possession Morton got a steal and hit a sprinting Gish at the other end for an- other layup and a 32-30 lead with 5:58 left. Princeton took the lead on a Reggie McIntyre drive, but Morton answered when he was fouled on a drive and hit two free-throws to tie it at 3:13. Morton then broke the game open with a steal, layup and free-throw for a 37-34 lead with 1:52. Pike Central's defense got a stop and Peyton Howald, back in the game, scored on a baseline layup to make it 39 - 34 with 1:02 left. Morton fouled at the oth- er end and Princeton took the ball out under the basket. On the inbounds play the ball came loose and there were two separate scrambles, with numerous players on the floor before Gish came up with it. He missed on his drive, but Sorgius rebounded and scored for a 41-34 lead with less than 30 seconds to go. Princeton's Christian Mow- ery put up a 'moonshot' over a Charger defender that went in for three, but it was too lit- tle too late. Braden Howald got a base- line layup near the buzzer to finish off the Tigers 43-37. Coach Elliott talked about how his team has grown and matured and overcome to get the win. "At the beginning of the year, this is a game we probably drop. We put our- selves in that situation sev- eral times this year. We have played a lot of close games and grown throughout the year." Chargers handle Vincennes to advance to sectional finals By Andy Heuring Quade Morton poured in 22 points and Kendric Sorgi- us posted his second consec- utive double-double, as Pike Central handled Vincennes 51-43 on Friday night. The win advanced the Chargers to the finals of the sectional for the first time since 2017. Sorgius finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Chargers jumped out of the gate against Vincennes going on a 9 -0 run to start the game. Sorgius scored on the first possession inside. Peyton Howald dropped a three-point- er, then Morton hit Howald with a pass on the baseline for a layup; and Sorgius was fouled in the paint and hit both free-throws to give Pike Cen- tral a 9 -0 start at the 4:30 mark of the first quarter. "Absolutely it is a big win for us. I thought our kids came out and played hard. We jumped on them early and kind of let them back in to, but then we picked it up and made plays down the stretch," said Charger Coach Hunter Elliott. Vincennes finally got their first points on two free-throws by Drew Hambrick at the 4:13 mark. Gish finished off the first quarter by picking off a pass and taking it to the hoop for a 12-4 lead. "Quade and Gish have a knack for it. They are pretty athletic. They get in the pass- ing lanes and pick a couple off and it gets us rolling," said El- liott. Pike Central started the second quarter hot as well, stretching the lead to 17-4 on a three-pointer by Sorgius and a steal by Morton, that led to two -free-throws making 17-6 with 5:40 to go in the half. Vincennes went on a 6 -2 run over the last two minutes of the half to cut Pike Central's lead to 24-18, despite Morton having nine points in the quar- ter. Pike Central pushed the lead back to nine at 30 -21 on a 15 footer by Gish half-way through the third quarter. But Vincennes made another run in the last three minutes to make it 34-30 after three quarters. Xander Hunt, of Vincennes, hit a 15 footer two minutes into the fourth quarter cutting the Charger lead to 36 -33. "Early we were really good. Later, offensively, I thought we were taking some rushed shots. Then they ( Vincennes) got rolling and when that starts it just starts going in," said Elliott of the third quar- ter. With five minutes in the game, Pike Central worked the ball for a full minute be- fore Peyton Howald found a seam and hit a three-footer in traffic. Sorgius grabbed the re- bound of a Vincennes miss, and Morton scored on a jump- er in the lane making it 40 -33 with 2:57 left. The Charger defense got another stop and Morton was fouled while hitting a layup. He completed the three-point play at the line for a 43-33 lead, with less than two min- utes left. Vincennes went to a full court press, but the Chargers made them pay for it, as Sor- gius took a pass at mid-court and hit Morton who breaking to the basket for a 45 -35 lead with 1:02 left. Pike Central hit their last six free-throws to control the game that end- ed up 51-41. The Chargers were 11-12 on the night from the line.
