Poplar Street, Petersburg "Paul, a servant of God…" (Titus 1:1). It's interesting that Paul would call himself a "servant of God," for that exact phrase is only used four times earlier in the Bible, and each time it was used of Moses (I Chronicles 6:49; 24:9; Nehemiah 10 :29; Daniel 9:11). So while all believers should try to serve God, in using that exact phrase, Paul was saying that he was the servant of God for us Gentiles (Romans 11:13), just as Moses was the servant of God to the people of Israel. When I was a young man, the CBS affiliate in Chicago promoted itself as "the ten o'clock news." Of course, those who preferred to watch the news on other channels would have disputed that claim! But when Miriam disput- ed Moses' claim to being the servant of God to the Jews, insisting that she had as much authority in Israel as he had, she was strick- en with leprosy (Numbers 12:2-10). In light of the severity of that judgment, anyone today claiming to be a servant of God on a level with the apostle Paul should be thankful we live in the dispensation of grace! This would include any man who calls himself a prophet, for proph- ets in the Bible were men who could "prophe- sy" and speak the very Word of God (cf. The prophet declares, "Thus says the Lord," and what usu- ally followed was bad news for the intended au- dience. Often, the prophet experienced perse- cution after delivering the "Word of the Lord." The unnamed prophet who told wicked king Ahab he would die in battle was banished to prison. Jeremiah stood before king Zedekiah and said unless the people repented, Jerusa- lem would fall, and the Temple destroyed. His critics tried to kill him, but God intervened and saved his life. In the New Testament, king Herod ordered John the Baptist beheaded for reproving him of sexual immorality and other sins. The proph- et who said to love your neighbor as yourself, was crucified between two thieves. Since 9 -11, America has embarked upon a series of wars and coups unabated with nary a peep from the church. America has become ac- customed to war. We do not debate the merits of going to war. Billboards and T V ads promot- ing military service use the imagery of a war- rior and war as something glamorous to lure gullible and naïve youth into military service. What troubles me is the church has re- mained eerily silent as politicians spread gun- boat diplomacy all over the globe. They sold the first gulf war as a "Just War." This is not a political phrase coined by a speechwriter. This "Just War" comes from the church fa- ther St. Thomas Aquinas who lived and wrote in the 13th century. Prior to Aquinas, the church was pacifist and taught war was wrong and we should prefer peaceful solutions be- cause our savior is the "Prince of Peace." War was reserved for a last resort. Aquinas changed all this when he outlined a Christian model for war. Sadly, the church It has been another slow week at our house. Plenty of things have required our attention but little time to be outdoors. I am an outdoor person and so far we have only been able to enjoy one af- ternoon doing a few of our chores. We have all had so much congestion and run- ny noses and it seems as though at least one of us has been puny at any given time. I have had two rounds of medicine for mine. I don't feel real bad, but my nose is yet congested and I still have a cough which is deep and hard. I have been deal- ing with this for about two weeks now. I'm ready for it to say uncle and just quit trying to make me miserable. The grandkids are doing okay, but there are times when they cough. This must be something you just have to wear off. The Russian leader is still determined to over- come Ukraine and it looks like he is prepared to pull out all the stops in order to win his war. There has been lots of info shared and much con- versation about this war. The news media has done a decent job of keep- ing of keeping people up with the fighting. It's hard to find anyone who doesn't have an opin- ion about what should be done and there is al- ways people who want to play the blame game. Remember those on our prayer list, the shut-ins and our lost loved ones. Jesus makes a difference in our life by showing us we are not alone in our journey, though those that have gone on before us and he that was willing to lay his life down for us, we should live every- day with a great purpose and gratitude. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hin- ders and the sin that so eas- ily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such oppo- sition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart" (Hebrews 12:1-3). "God is not ashamed to be called their God " (Hebrews 11:16). We live in an upside down world. People hate when they should love, quarrel when they should be friendly, fight when they should be peace- ful, wound when they should heal, steal when they should share, do wrong when they should do right. A clown with a weight in it's head, no matter how placed, it always assumed and up-side down position. It could be placed on it's feet, but would always resume the up- side down position. It illustrates why the disci- ples seemed to be misfits to the world. To an upside down man, a right side up man seems upside down. To the nonbeliever, the true Christian is an oddity and ab- normality. Yet this isn't the whole picture, for all around us are people who sense some- thing is wrong with their top- sy-turvy lives, and they yearn to be right side up. We should pray for them and ask God to help us point them to life's only solid foundation, Jesus Christ.
