Winslow Elementary participates in Newspapers for Education By Sherri Sebella Heather Nelson's fourth grade class at Winslow El- ementary get excited about reading the newspaper as part of their classroom activi- ties each week. "We do different things each year," Nelson said. "I love to use the newspaper for Grammar activities. We take a look at the writing; talk about writing for an audience; talk about different types of writ- ing; and sentence structure. We do scavenger hunts look- ing for weather forecasts, sales ads, headlines, reporter names, photographer names, editor, letters to the editor, and more." Nelson gives the students a list of spelling words for the week and then they look through the newspaper to see if they can find their spelling words. Newspapers in Education Week occurs the first week in March each year as a way to inspire educators to incorpo- rate newspapers in the class- room. "Kids are always excit- ed about getting the newspa- per for Newspapers in Edu- cation Week," Nelson said. "They love reading the paper and doing classroom activi- ties with it. There are so many great things about kids read- ing the newspaper. In our ar- ea especially, kids may see the news on television, but even the Evansville news doesn't cover our local events. It is important for kids to see that the newspaper is an excellent source to learn about current events in our community. Us- ing that source can help them become educated, involved citizens of their community." Newspapers in Education Week is sponsored by an or- ganization called Newspapers in Education, a community of newspapers and professional groups. However, the concept dates back to June 8, 1975, when the Portland (Maine) Eastern Herald published an editorial promoting the coop- erative work between schools and local newspapers.
