Johnson calls for equal voting rights (1963) • Washington puts an end to the Newburgh Conspiracy (1783) SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Petersburg Press Friday and Tuesday, Mar. 7 and 11, 1947 Last Thursday Mrs. Glen- na Miley, Mrs. Charlie Battles, Mrs. Frank Willis and Mrs. Sal- ly Brisco gathered at the home of Mrs. Lucille Valin for a quilt- ing party. Sonny Adams, son of Mrs. Bertha Adams received a med- al of commendation for his work with unit 12 of the hospi- tal corp in the Empress Victo- ria Hospital in South Hampton, England. The letter accompa- nying the medal stated that the award would be officially noted on his records in file in the war department. The Net Fishing Bill spon- sored by Representative Beech- er Conard passed the state sen- ate 41 to nothing and passed in- to the hands of Governor Gates, Wednesday morning. The farm and home train sponsored by Purdue Univer- sity and widely advertised over the state attracted a large crowd Wednesday night when it ar- rived in Petersburg. In all 610 persons saw the exhibit. The bad weather coupled with the siding being so far from Peters- burg without a doubt cut down the attendance considerably. The train consisted of fourteen cars in all with eight arranged to display exhibits of farming methods, modernization and other worthwhile farm projects. Starting at the far end of the train visitors moved towards the front of the train from car to car ending at a large bulletin board on which many bulletins were offered free for the asking. The county agent and those interest- ed in the project expressed their gratitude to the firms who spon- sored much of the publicity for the train. SIXTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, Mar. 8, 1962 Winners of the Cradle of Lib- erty Chapter of the DAR Good Poor Farm School The Poor Farm School photo was taken in the early 1940s. The school was located near where Pike Central now is located. It was known as the "poor farm" school, because the school building was near where the farm was located. The poor farm was a large building which housed people who had inadequate income, and was actually a farm. It had nothing to do with the families of the students who went to school near there. Students in the first row included Ruth Young, Leliah Alert, Betty Kline, Clester McQueen, Doyal Bottoms, Gordon Nance, Gene Tyring, Donald Deffendoll, Philip Stewart, Maurice Nance and unknown. In the second row are Betty Abell, unknown, unknown, Myrna Chew, Lo- la Deffendoll, Charles Sturgeon, unknown and Jerry Tyring. The third row included Heber Miller (teacher), Geraldine Nance, Donald Stur- geon, unknown, Albert Stephenson, Shirley Sturgeon, Arbutus Johnson, unknown and unknown. The photo was submitted by Arbutus Reed. Citizens Contest this year were Miss Judy Kinman of the Peters- burg high school and Miss Mary Ann DeMotte of the Otwell high school. Miss Kinman, a senior in the Petersburg high school, is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Kinman. She is third in her class, a Student Council member 1960 -61 and a member of the Science club. She is a past member of the Dance club, Pep club and high school band. She was the recipient of the Gray's Good Citizenship Award, 1961; a member of 1961 State Junior Leader Council and delegate to State Fair Girl School in 1961. She is the Past Honored Queen of Bethel No. 48 of Petersburg and member of Y Teens. She is a member of the First Baptist church of Petersburg. Miss De- Motte, a senior in Otwell high school, is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Roy DeMotte. She is a member of the band, chorus, Future Homemakers of Ameri- ca, Pep club and Pep Band. She is also part-time accompanist for the chorus. She has been the secretary and treasurer of her class for the past two years. She was also treasurer of the Future Homemakers of Amer- ica last year. A fter graduation, Mary Ann Plans to enter Indi- ana State Teachers college and major in music. Miss Kinman and Miss DeMotte and their mothers are to be the guests of the Chapter at the meeting on March 13 at the home of Mrs. Herman Helfenbein. Mrs. Gar- rett Qualkinbush, Southern Dis- trict, will be guest speaker and will present the Good Citizen Certificates to the girls. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Eh- rlich are proud of their grand- son, Rodney Ehrlich of Monte- rey, who won first place in the state contest with a coronet so- lo. June Ellen Zechiel was the accompanist. Rodney is the son of Don and Marion Ehrlich, for- merly of Winslow. The Ehrlich's moved two years ago from Fran- cisville to Monterey where Mr. Ehrlich is teaching. He is Rod- ney's music instructor. Mr. and Mrs. Don Ehrlich are former Winslow residents. FIFTY YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Mar. 9, 1972 The Pike County courthouse has been undergoing a face lift through the efforts of Green Thumb workers. The workers have painted all the stairs in the building, the basement floor and the rest rooms have received paint,plumbing repair and re- placement. The outside grounds have been cleaned. Work start- ed in January and is expected to finish around April 1. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO The Press-Dispatch Thursday, Mar. 6, 1997 Heavy rain of about two inch- es over the weekend is causing flooding and several washouts around the county. The White River at Petersburg is supposed to crest late Thursday at 22.8 feet, barring no more rainfall this week. Floodstage is 16 feet at Petersburg. A county official said the county had a couple of washouts and a crew worked much of the day on Sunday repairing them following the heavy rain on Saturday night. Pike Central ribbon winners in the recent Oakland City Uni- versity's High School art show included juniors Jacy Fox and Cassie Whittington and senior Gina Lackner. Jacy entered a pastel drawing called "Eye of the Tiger." Cassie submitted a self-portrait sculpture called "Glimpses of My Life." Gina's entry was a mixed media draw- ing called "Kitchen table Col- lage." The three girls are art students of Carolyn McGehee.
