In an interview, Braun talked about the near- ly five trillion dollar spending plans that are being pushed by President Joe Biden and his administration. "To put it in perspective, that is a cou- ple hundred billion more than we spend in the entire govern- ment. Generally, we raise $ 3.7 trillion in revenue each year. In the same year, we are going to more than double our bud- get and borrow nearly all of it to do it," said Braun. He said he and other con- servative-minded office- holders with business back- grounds tried to talk to others in Washington, D.C. about the effect of spending that much money they don't have. "Most people there just shrug their shoulders," said Braun. He said many of those push- ing the plan believe there are many things this coun- try needs and that the feder- al government is the only way to do them. He said to achieve those things, they are "push- ing aside all the norms and principals that business peo- ple know have to be adhered to." He said the crowd push- ing the spending is the Mad- ison Ave. crowd of market- ing and finance and they are selling the country a bill of goods. "The American Res- cue Act is $1.9 trillion. It was to help with COVID, but on- ly 10 percent of the money ac- tually dealt with COVID re- lated items. The fed is buy- ing nearly all the debt. Then there is the American Jobs Plan at $1.2 trillion and now the American Family Plan at $ 3.5 trillion that total more than $ 6 trillion," said Braun. He said Republicans blundered their chances to defeat it when they had 19 go along with the $1.2 trillion that was for hard infrastruc- ture. "But Nancy Pelosi was telling them she was going to attach another $ 3.7 trillion to it," said Braun. It was a "feeding frenzy," said Braun of the arm twist- ing by lobbyists to get enough Republicans to go along with it. "They came to them and of- fered them things they real- ly wanted. Which way do you think the lobbyists stood on whether or not to spend more money.. . I call it an unholy alliance of people from both sides of the aisle and in the system that has been driving the spending and deficit for a long time," said Braun. He said the runaway spend- ing will likely only stop when either the Medicare system or the Social Security system runs out of money and col- lapses. His solution to deal with it is to put term limits on. "I have term limited myself. I have said I will only run for re-election one time," said Braun. Senators are elect- ed to six-year terms. He said term limits would get rid of the "career politicians." He cited Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, saying when their terms were up, they ran back home, because they liked what they were do- ing before they were in office more than being in Washing- ton, D.C. "It (career politicians and the swamp in DC) was just something they (founding fa- thers) never envisioned," said Braun. On the subject of A fghani- stan, Braun said, "To me, this is one of the biggest examples of what's wrong with how the government is currently be- ing run. We had a policy that many agreed with, in terms of leaving places where it's been a graveyard for many empires. We've spent a lot of treasure and blood there. It's disgraceful that we're leaving in an embarrassing way like this, reminiscent of Vietnam. I think this was an unforced error. President Trump, when he actually agreed to doing it over timeā€”it never would have been done like this. We had the ability to orchestrate this to get our people out safely, A fghanis and the mil- itary. Unfortunately, this was botched by the Biden admin- istration, and I hope they are held accountable for this," said Braun. Indiana Senator Mike Braun talks with Teresa and Mike Goodpaster, and Robyn Smith, who were registering people Tuesday morning at the Pike County Republi- can's golf outing.
