MAIN ST., PETERSBURG Let's Go CHARGERS! 81 2-354 -9268 • HAIR COLOR • PERMS • WAXING Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m. - ? Open Late Evenings Walk-In (Hours vary) or by appointment • MANICURES • PEDICURES • GEL MANICURES • AND MORE! Delobel and Chanley return from regional By James Capozella Gone from last year's men's squad are Chargers Noah Rus- sell, Ijaa Chambers, Ethan Gorby, Trent Zimmerman and Lane Potts. Sophomore Shane Woodhall joins classmate Jere- my Delobel, along with juniors Peyton Chaley and Dallas Re- utepohler on the squad. New to the varsity are freshmen Blaine Barnett, Carter Back- well and Tyler DeCoursey. The boys finished sixth in the sectional and had three regional qualifiers in Ijaa Chambers, Peyton Chanley and Jeremy Delobel. The La- dy Titans faired better with a fourth place sectional fin- ish and sixth at regional, with three semi-state qualifiers in Libby Stone, Quinlan Teague and Anna Whitehead. The big news here in Char- ger cross country is the return of Randy Graham, who has stepped into the head coach job for both teams this year. He replaces Cain Parker, who was a first year Charger var- sity head coach last season. Cain was a recent Universi- ty of Southern Indiana gradu- ate who ran four years of cross country and track. The 2013 Pike Central grad was eighth in the 10K NCA A champion- ships and fifth in the GLVC 8K, and earned All-GLVC and All-Midwest honors in the 2017-18 cross country season. Graham takes over a boys' team with two juniors, two sophomores and three fresh- men. Returning for 2021 is assistant coach Wil Teague. Chanley and Reutepohler will lead the seven-man field for the Pike Central Chargers. Coach Graham said, "I took the position just a few days be- fore the official start of the season, so I didn't get the op- portunity to work with the ath- letes over the summer. Howev- er, several of them put in some miles on their own, which is a good thing. We also have picked up a few runners here in the last few days, so right now we are individualizing many of the workouts and get- ting everyone where we need them. We are very optimistic about the season and are glad to get going. We would like to have more runner,s so we will be working on that as we go. "The boys' team will be a young group as we have no seniors. We return two re- gional qualifier runners in Peyton Chanley and Jeremy Delobel. Blaine Barrett is a freshman who had a strong middle school year last year and placed ninth in the middle school PAC meet. He should give us some help. We like the improvement we've seen with junior Dallas Reutepohler, sophomore Shane Woodhall and freshman Carter Black- well this past week. "We anticipate them really coming on for us as the sea- son progresses. Freshman Ty- ler DeCoursey started with us this week, but already looks like he is going to catch on with this sport just fine and he will be a help to us as well. "With only seven runners on the team, we are going to need everyone of them to stay injury free and to con- tinue showing improvement. These seven guys will make a nice young nucleus to build a team around the next cou- ple of seasons. We expect this group to show steady improve- ment and to make some great strides late in the season." Coach Graham added, "Lainey Johnson is our man- ager this season and we are thankful to have some help with those duties. Also, coach Wil Teague is returning as as- sistant coach and I am glad to have him on board helping us. I have always been bless- ed with great assistant coach- es in all my years coaching cross country at Pike Central and this is very important." Charger cross country kicked off the season attend- ing the Hokum Karen event at Gibson Southern and are pre- paring for the Southridge In- vitational on August 24, fol- lowed by the Angel Mounds hosted Dennis Bays Warrior Invitational set for August 28.
