Along with all five of their start- ers from last year, they have a fresh- man who has broken into the their top five already. Pike Cen- tral's girls' golf team last year had no seniors, but this year, it has three seniors and appears to be a much more consistent squad with another year's ex- perience under their belts. Sophie Carnahan returns as their number one player. She consistently shot in the 40s last year and is doing that again, but she is now in the lower 40s. "She had a 42 already and made a triple on hole six, so she could have had a 39," said Charger coach Jarrod Gideon. He said Pike Central has only a handful of girls break 40 and he believes Carnahan will add her name to that list. "She has played a lot this summer. She played in a handicap league with her father. Just the extra competition has helped her," said Gideon. "If she starts making some putts, she could really post some scores for us." He add- ed, "When you start shooting 45 consistently, you are going to beat most of the ladies." Seniors Nevi Lemond and Sydney Loveless return again after playing varsity all last season. "They have been hit- ting the ball well for a while and shooting in the low 50s. I just keep waiting for them to breakthrough with a low score. They both can, it is just going to take a couple of good bounces for them," said Gideon. Loveless did just that last week as she shot her per- sonal best score with a 46 against Heritage Hills. "Syd- ney is probably our best put- ter," said Gideon. Lemond shot a 51 and 55 in her first two matches this sea- son. So she is on the verge of breaking through the 50 bar- rier. Gideon said Lemond hits the ball a long way. Junior Chloe Wil- liams is the oth- er return- ing start- er. "Chloe is a good athlete. She hits it a mile, but struggles with her putting. She is very capable of a good score." Ella McGuire and Grace Goodpaster both played ju- nior varsity last year and have been taking lessons. "I can tell a big difference. They have made big strides," said Goodpaster. Another junior, Mabrey Shoultz, returns. "She hasn't played at the varsity level yet, but she will play at some point. She has a good short game," said Gideon. A pleasant surprise for the Chargers is freshman Brai- ley Mills. "I see a lot of Na- talie Bohnert in her. She is left-handed and very athlet- ic," said Gideon. Mills picked up golf clubs for the first time this summer. "She has already broke 50 in practice and she has been in my top five every time so far this season," said Gideon. Gideon said the goal for his squad is for them to break 200 as a team. They came close, as they shot a 203 last week against Heritage Hills and that was without Lemond in the lineup. He said the Pocket Athletic Conference is now a much tougher event, with four of the Big 8 schools of Boon- ville, Mt. Vernon, Princeton and Washington added to the conference. But so far, the Chargers have been playing each week and making strides. "We want to break 200 and keep getting better and be competitive when the PAC rolls around," said Gideon.
