D-4 Wednesday, August 18, 2021 The Press-Dispatch Christian Baptist Church of Christ Catholic Independent Independent Church of God Lutheran Methodist BRENTON CHAPEL CHURCH OF CHRIST 1194 E. CR 400 N. Prides Creek Road Petersburg Sunday morning Bible classes 10 a.m.; morning worship 10:30 a.m. and evening worship at 6 p.m. Tony Sims, Elder Ross Williams, Elder ARTHUR G.B. CHURCH 5670 S. St. Rd. 61 Winslow 812-582-0354 Sunday school at 9:30 a.m.; morning worship and chil- dren's church at 10 :30 a.m.; Business meeting the third Sunday of the month, follow- ing morning worship. "He will once again fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy" ( Job 8:21, NLT). When was the last time you shouted with joy? As the years go by, sometimes we feel weighted down with the cares of the world, job, fam- ily and loss. We have heart- aches that are tough to bear. We become weary and our bodies get tired. It is import- ant in times of heaviness that we find reasons to smile and laugh. God created laughter, and he is the source of true joy. If you feel that there is not enough joy in your life, it is time to reflect on God's love for you. Think of all the bless- ings he has given us and that He delights in us. That alone should give us reason to smile. Remembering those who need the Lord's peace, those who have lost loved ones, and those who need a reason to smile again. We invite you to worship with us. Ralph Newkirk, Pastor Marla Morrison, Reporter FBC Petersburg 8th and Poplar Street Petersburg 812-354-6582 American Baptist Church Our Vision is to Engage with God and equip Christians to Reach Out, Show Love and Serve our Community. Join us on Sunday morn- ings at 10 :30 a.m. in-person or online ( YouTube or Face- book) for a time of fellowship and Christ-centered instruc- tion from God's Word. Sunday school starts at 9:30 a.m. for all ages. Adult Bible study and youth group meet Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you here. Michael Miller, Pastor GLEZEN G.B. CHURCH Corner of Center and Sycamore Sunday school 9:30 a.m.; morning worship 10 :30 a.m.; Wednesday Bible study at 6:30 p.m., continuing studying in Daniel. Remember those on our prayer list, the shut-ins and our lost loved ones. "Exhort one another daily" (Hebrews 3:13). The Greek word for ex- hort is "parakalew." It comes from two words, one meaning "alongside of" and the other meaning "to call." This is the root of the Greek word "para- clete," which is the name Je- sus gave the Holy Spirit. The real ministry of the Holy Spir- it is to exhort and encourage us in our walk with God. You are never more like the Holy Spirit and more in tune with His ministry than when you are exhorting and encourag- ing others. An exhorter can turn a los- er into a winner, a shirker in- to a worker and a pessimist into an optimist. They have a ministry of affirmation and appreciation. It's important to remember the distinction be- tween appreciation and affir- mation. We appreciate what a person does, but we affirm who a person is. Appreciation comes and goes because it's usually relat- ed to someone's accomplish- ments, but affirmation goes to the heart of a person be- cause it is directed at that per- son's individual worth. An ex- horter has the ability to make you feel good about yourself. They uplift, inspire, motivate, and make you feel better just by being around you. The Bi- ble says that Barnabas was an exhorter. "Then news of these things came to the ears of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch. When he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and en- couraged them all that with purpose of heart they should continue with the Lord" (Acts 11:22-23) —from The Word for Today. If you could know beyond the shadow of a doubt that God had completely forgiven you, what reason would you have to keep feeling guilty? Absolutely none. And God of- fers you exactly that: complete and total forgiveness, no mat- ter what you have done. Jesus willingly took your sins and mine upon Himself, and He paid the penalty we deserved. We don't need to wonder if we've been forgiven; we don't need to carry around a burden of guilt. We must look for the meaning-not to the mind, but to the heart. Theologi- cal knowledge is knowledge about God. While this is indis- pensable, it is not sufficient. It bears the same relation to man's spiritual need as a well does to the need of his phys- ical body. It is not the rock- lined pit for which the dusty traveler longs, but the sweet, cool water that flows up from it. It is not intellectual knowl- edge about God that quenches man's ancient heart-thirst, but the very Person and Presence of God Himself" —A.W. Tozer. Mike Atkins, Pastor PETERSBURG FREE METHODIST CHURCH 202 Walnut Street We are running pretty much back to normal now, with the exception that we haven't opened our nursery yet. We will plan to do that as soon as possible. Normal weekly schedule is as follows: Sunday school starts at 9:30 a.m. with morn- ing worship starting at 10 :30 a.m. We are doing teen min- istry on Sunday nights at 5:30 p.m. during the summer. Our Wednesday program will start with an outdoor family night celebration September 15. We hope to have inflatables, but if not, we will have plenty of food and activities. We are still working out the details of the Wednesday night min- istry. With the loss of Shirley Graham, our preschool lead- er for the past 50 years, we have to adjust how we do min- istry. We plan to do ministry for children from preschool to high school. Time is still to be decided. The time will only be one hour this year, and we plan to start earlier if possible and we will provide transportation for those who need it. With school starting in Au- gust, that would be a good time for you to reconnect with us on Sunday morning. Most people have returned, but some are still being cau- tious. I can't overestimate the value of gathering together in person on Sunday morning, so we can take who we are in Christ, and apply it to every ar- ea of our lives. Peace and joy in the Lord.
