Se- nior Sydney Loveless had the low round for the Char- gers with her personal best score of 46. Loveless start- ed with par on hole one and ran into some struggles on hole two with an eight, but then righted the ship and finished strong with pars on seven, eight and nine. Fellow senior Sophie Car- nahan also broke 50, as she shot a 48, making par on holes one and five. Freshman Brailey Mills continues to show improve- ment as she shot a 50. Mills didn't start playing until this summer. Chloe Williams' 59 rounded out the Chargers' 203. Heritage Hills shot a 229. Their lead player was the medalist with a 45, but was the only player for the Patri- ots to break 50. Their other players shot 51, 66 and 67. Chargers show intensity at Crawford scrimmage The Pike Central Charger football scrimmage at Craw- ford County on Friday, Au- gust 13 went well, according to Head Coach Kelly Brashear. The scrimmage included the Chargers, Crawford County and North Central Farmers- burg. In the first session, the Chargers played against Craw- ford, keeping Crawford at zero and scoring twice. During the second session, the Chargers played North Central, who gained two points and kept them at zero. Although the Chargers came very close on two occasions. Coach Brashear said, "We had more penalties than we would like to see, most of them being offensive holds. That is something that can be correct- ed, and we will do so before week one." He said he was most im- pressed with the way the Chargers played with intensi- ty and passion. He could tell that they were all having fun on the field, and did a great job of communicating with one another and playing as a unit. The team had several play- ers that made big plays that day. According to Coach Brashear, sophomores Bra- den Howald and Julian Gish were exceptional, and senior Wyatt Frasure made numer- ous plays at inside linebacker, along with Corey Goeppner. However, he said he did not want to take away from other players, because all of them made plays throughout the scrimmage. "I've been coaching long enough to know when we have a group of young men who are ready to make a change in the football program. I truly be- lieve we have a group of play- ers who are ready to lay the foundation for success. We have a long way to go and a lot of work to do, but I believe that other programs are going to take notice of us this year," said Coach Brashear. Pike Central Athletic Di- rector Dustin Powell sent out a directive stating, "Due to is- sues beyond our control, we will not be playing a football game this Friday, August 20 vs. Waggener, of Louisville." Outside sources say this is due to COVID. Pike Central Chargers will play their first game of the sea- son against Tecumseh on Fri- day, August 27 at Pike Central. Hokum Relays a season stepping stone By Matthew Haycraft Chargers' co-ed varsity cross country competed in the Hokum Karem Relays at Gibson Southern on Saturday, August 14. Other schools com- peting in this relay were: Barr- Reeve, Bloomington North (girls), Evansville Central, Evansville North, Evansville Reitz, Mount Vernon, North Posey, Pike Central, Princ- eton, Signature School and South Knox. At the Hokum Karem Re- lay, relay teams consist of two members and each team runs a 2k loop four times. Each mem- ber on the two-person team will run two loops, alternating between them. Awards were given to the top 10 pairs indi- vidually. Team scores consist- ed of the school's top three pairs across the finish line. Head Coach Randy Graham stated, "Only about half of our team was able to participate in today's meet, but it was a good start for us." Pike Central boys' junior Dallas Reutepohler, freshman Carter Blackwell and fresh- man Blaine Barnett placed 22nd at the Hokum Karem Re- lay with a time of 30 :25. The Lady Chargers' fresh- man Xavery Weisman and ju- nior Kennedy Willis placed 12th in the relay with a time of 34:10. While sophomore An- na Whitehead and freshman Eibhlin Teague place 28th with a time of 38:07. Coach Graham summed up the relay by saying, "This was a good way to get the season started to kind of see where we are at individually and to run with some other area athletes." "We now have a 10 -day stretch here until everything really gets going, so we will have an opportunity to focus on our training and to contin- ue our improvement. We are very proud of all the kids for battling through the heat this past week and the improve- ment that they are showing." The Chargers' next meet will be the Southridge Invita- tional on Tuesday, August 24 at Southridge High School.
