During the first period of the game, South Knox scored the first goal about halfway through the peri- od, but not without some ma- jor resistance from the Char- gers. A South Knox player kicked the ball, almost mak- ing a goal, but Evan Conder jumped in, helping the goalie, and cleared the ball from the goal with an impressive head hit, only for the ball to be re- turned back to the goal by an- other South Knox player, just out of the reach of the goalie. Head Coach Jacob Western said, "Evan Conder and Xavi- er Shoultz did an excellent job controlling our defense." In the second half of the first period, the Chargers fought desperately to make that first goal of the scrim- mage. They fought the ball down field, passing back and forth, until finally get- ting close to the goal and be- ing ready to attempt a shot. Charger Jonas Martinez shot for the goal, but it was deflect- ed by South Knox. Then Joey Ridao immediately returned the ball, and made the first goal by making good contact and catching the goalie off guard. The first period ended with the score tied one to one. In the second period, the battle continued, with South Knox scoring another goal with 14 minutes left. The Chargers raced the ball down field, passing and dribbling the ball back and forth, and up and down the field. With a little under six minutes left in the game, Ridao finally made a goal with the help of Isaac Burdette. There were only minutes left in the game and South Knox took the ball down field with the Chargers bat- tling them all the way. South Knox kicked the ball to the goal, the goalie dove and it looked like he landed on the ball and stopped it, but the ball made it through, spiral- ing on the ground. Pike Central fought to get another goal for the next two minutes and the game ended with the score three to two, Chargers' loss. Both teams did penal- ty kicks at the end of the game that were apparent- ly not scored, but were prac- tice. The Chargers made ev- ery penalty kick past the goal- ie, but the Pike Central goal- ie was able to deflect two of South Knox's penalty shots. Coach Western wrapped up the game by saying, "We had a few big mistakes that cost us, but that's what a scrim- mage is for. Hopefully, we can clean a few things up in prac- tice the next few days. Offen- sively, we controlled posses- sion the majority of the game. We just have to be more ag- gressive getting shots on goal." Pike Central will play their next game on Friday, August 20 at Evansville Bosse at 6:30 p.m. INTRODUCING OUR NEWEST PHYSICIAN William Thompson, III, DO Family Medicine / Sports Medicine Now accepting new patients! Charger Eli Arnold played extremely well during the number one singles, accord- ing to Head Coach Brent Beck. He said the match last- ed for two hours and would have went much longer if they had not opted for a tie-break instead of a third set. Arnold was defeated by Ryan Paul in the number one singles 6 -7, 6 - 4 (8 -10). Coach Beck said, "He (Ar- nold) was hitting his shots and moving well." Pike Central's Nate Car- ter was defeated by Mt. Ver- non's Adam Burke 0 -6, 0 -6 in the number two singles. Nate had to be bumped up to num- ber two singles from three singles for this match. Coach Beck summed up the tennis matches stating, "We were a little shorthand- ed and did have to adjust our lineup a little bit. For their first high school match, the boys played pretty well and competed throughout the match." Their next match will be Wednesday, August 18 against North Posey at North Posey High School.
