Holida Happy Strong floor game not enough to keep up with Lady Titans By Mike Sandifar Despite playing an ex- cellent "floor game," the Pike Central Lady Chargers dropped a 72-30 Pocket Ath- letic Conference (PAC) girls' basketball outing to Gibson Southern in Charger Gymna- sium Thursday evening, due to cold shooting and being dominated on the backboards. The hosts committed just 11 turnovers in the 32-minute contest, but "ice cold" shoot- ing doomed the Lady Char- gers, as the Lady Titans took a quick 15 -3 lead at the end of the first quarter of play, as Pike Central connected on on- ly one of 14 shot attempts in the first eight minutes of the game. The shooting woes for PCHS continued in the sec- ond eight-minute stanza, as the Lady Chargers put home just three of 11 field goal tries to go into the halftime inter- mission trailing 40 -13, drop- ping in just four of 25 shots. In addition to the tough night shooting (nine of 52 overall from the floor), the Lady Chargers had the im- possible task of rebounding with the much taller and ex- perienced Lady Titans, as the eventual winners grabbed 42 rebounds, while the hosts were able to garner only 18 caroms. The game's leading scorer was Gibson Southern fresh- man Chloey Graham with 21 points (and eight rebounds), but she had ample help, as 6'2" junior Taylor Sing- er added 17 counters and a school-record 11 blocked shots, along with10 grabs of missed shots. A bright spot for PCHS was the shooting of Kenzie Pow- ell, who put home a solid six of 14 field goal attempts, in- cluding a sizzling six of nine from beyond the three-point line for 18 points. Post player Mallory Hunt chipped in with eight mark- ers for the Lady Chargers to go along with five rebounds. Shelby Meadows was the leading rebounder for PCHS, grabbing six errant shot at- tempts. The visitors put home sev- en of 10 free throw attempts, while the hosts managed just five of 12 charity opportuni- ties. The win propelled the La- dy Titans to 5 -2 on the year, while the loss dropped the Lady Chargers to 4-6 after 10 games. Chargers fall to Pioneers in close match-up By Mike Sandifar Boonville's Ryan Smith, a 5'10" senior, connected on a driving left-handed lay- up from the left of the lane to break a 41-41 tie with 3.5 seconds left in the game. It gave the host Pioneers a 43- 41 Pocket Athletic Confer- ence (PAC) basketball victo- ry over visiting Pike Central here Tuesday evening. For the Chargers, it was a heart-breaking loss. They led the eventual winners 40 - 36 with 2:46 left on the clock. They still led the visitors 41- 38 with just 33 seconds left in the hard-fought PAC hard- wood outing. With only 22.4 ticks left in the contest, Smith pumped in a 22-foot jump shot from the top of the key to knot the score at 41-41. A fter a Charger missed jumper from 16 feet out on the left side of the floor with 13.4 seconds left, the Pioneers called a time out to set up the offense for a final shot in an effort to win the battle, with little time for the Chargers to respond. The Pioneers inbounded the basketball, and after just five seconds of play, the Char- gers committed a foul in the backcourt, a strategy set up by PCHS Coach Hunter Elliott, to keep the hosts from attacking the basket or getting an open jump shot, as Pike Central had been charged with only four fouls in the second half, giv- ing the Chargers two fouls "to give" before Boonville could go to the free-throw line. Boonville was given the ball near mid-court, and after two passes, Smith put the ball on Harrison Warrior 10-team tourney Pike Central's Griffin Boyd wrestled Evansville Memorial's Grant Sicale in the 126-pound class in the Evans- ville Harrison Warrior 10-team Saturday tourney.
