Director Diane Hornby has hired a new nurse on tem- porary contract, applied for a $108,000 grant for COVID-19 funds, and upgraded the serv- er and phone system. She also updated the coun- cil on COVID-19 counts, say- ing there were 21 deaths in November, compared to 13 in the months before, but De- cember had seen 12 deaths by the time of her Dec. 15 report. "We've been hit really hard," she said, adding they had seen an average of 35 pos- itive COVID cases per day in November. Hornby proposed a vaccina- tion roll-out plan that includ- ed a mobile trailer to take vac- cines on-site that the council did not approve. "Nobody knows about how the vaccines will come, but it will be small bunches at a time," she said. She added the vaccine is fragile, and has to be refrigerated at a specif- ic temperature. They would like to park the mobile clinic at sporting events, at Toyota Motor Manufacturing of In- diana and at Tri-State Speed- way in Haubstadt, for exam- ple, then do the vaccine as a drive-through. Roll-out will likely be over the next few years, since it will take more than one vaccination to be ful- ly inoculated. "It's not one and done," she said. "It has the potential to go slow or quick." A mobile trailer would need to have a generator, a sink to wash hands, a way to run health insurance and a refrig- erator. The total cost would be $ 37,020. She said post-COVID-19, they would use the trailer to do school vaccination clinics. Councilman Jay Riley said he would not vote for the trail- er. "Right now, I see us spend- ing more money than what we need to just because it's there. The server and phone I think is great," he said. He encouraged her to look instead at doing vaccine clin- ics, borrowing a room in the school or renting a trailer in- stead. "It's a big expense to be sit- ting 11 months of the year," Ri- ley said. They did approve two phar- macy-grade refrigerators for the health department to con- tain the vaccine, as private insurance vaccines have to be stored separately from vaccines done on govern- ment-provided insurance. The council also recom- mended renting local build- ings and facilities to benefit the community. Visitors and Tourism approves $500 to theater group By Janice Barniak Gibson County Visitors and Tourism donated $500 to the Broadway Players Thursday. "I think we need to support our theater group," said board member Stanley Madison. "I think it's a good idea, too," said Commissioner Mary Key. "Most produc- tions for this year have not been taking place." Courthouse upgrades requested By Janice Barniak Judge Rob Krieg asked Gib- son County Council Dec. 15 to approve upgrading acoustics with sound panels and the vid- eo equipment in the Superior Courtroom and jury room, adding people couldn't hear him through the mask as well as he'd like. The improved video equip- ment will cost between $17,000 and $18,000. Council tables jail design By Janice Barniak Gibson County Council approved paying more than $152,000 in design costs to American Structurepoint for their design work on a new jail, with the caveat they need- ed to include a notice that de- sign work needed to stop. "I'm leaning towards delay- ing and tabling," said Coun- cilman Jeremy Overton. "No more design work for a jail that we can't afford to contin- ue." He said he worried paying the bill might give the design firm the idea the council was okay to continue moving for- ward on the project, which they are not. Overton was assured by Commissioner Mary Key and County Attorney Jim Mc- Donald that they'd had mul- tiple conversations with the company about not doing any more work. Taylor Marshall belted out "Grown Up Christmas List" to the applause of performers waiting their turn during the socially-distanced Christmas concert Sat- urday. Shane Stewart sang country-favorite "Angels Among Us" during the courthouse concert, closed to the general public, but broadcasted to Gibson Coun- ty News and Talk's Facebook page.
