B-4 Wednesday, December 23, 2020 The Press-Dispatch MATCH Continued from page 1 the floor and drove to the hoop for the winning shot, giving the hosts a 43-41 lead with 3.5 seconds remaining in the fray. The Chargers got the bas- ketball inbounds quickly against the Pioneer full court pressure, but a long pass down court went out-of-bounds as the final buzzer sounded. The game was exciting and hard-fought by both teams from start to finish, with the score being close throughout the contest. The first quarter ending with Boonville hold- ing a narrow 12-9 margin af- ter eight minutes and still leading 19 -18 at the half in- termission. The third quarter closed with the Pioneers lead- ing just 29 -27. With 3:23 showing on the clock in the final stanza, the Chargers took a 37-35 lead on a three-point basket from the left side of the court by Pike's 6'4" sophomore Kendric Sor- gius. A fter a free throw by Boon- ville's 6'1" senior Devin Mock- obee put the score at 37-36 with 3:03 seconds left in the game, the Chargers' 5'11" se- nior Aden Brown rammed home a three-pointer to put the visitors up 40 -36 with 2:46 to go. Nobody blinked! With exactly 2:00 show- ing on the clock, Mockobee knocked down a two-point- er for the host team, putting Boonville within two at 40 -38. The Chargers turned the ball over on the Pioneer pres- sure defense, but Pike got the ball right back on a charge call against the hosts; howev- er, the eventual winners also got the ball back with another Pike Central turnover. The Chargers played great defense on the ensuing Pio- neer possession, and Julian Gish, a 6' freshman, grabbed a Boonville errant shot for PCHS with 51 ticks left in the fray, putting the visitors back in business on the offensive end of the floor leading 40 -38. Boonville fouled Pike Cen- tral's Sean Hanselman with 33 seconds remaining, and the 5'11" senior connected on his first attempt to put the Char- gers up 41-38, but he missed on his second try to put the ball back in the hands of the hosts, setting up the count- down to Smith's heroics in the waning seconds. Hanselman led all scorers in the outing, putting home 22 points on eight field goals and six charity tosses. Hanselman was the only Charger to toss in double-digit scoring in the game, but Gish added seven markers to the PCHS offen- sive side of the ledger. Smith led the Boonville scoring attack with 12 points, followed by 6'2" sophomore Jake Fuller with nine tallies, while Sharp chipped in with another six points. From the floor play pro- spective, the contest was well- played, as each team turned the basketball over just 10 times in the 32 minutes of play, with the Pioneers full court pressing the Chargers most of the battle. The hosts out-rebounded the Chargers 27-22 as a team, but Sorgius was the top re- bounder in the outing, haul- ing in seven caroms for PCHS, while Boonville's Smith grabbed six missed shot at- tempts to lead the winners on the boards. The Pioneers put home 47.4 percent of their field goals at- tempts (18 of 38), including three of 10 from beyond the three-point line, while the Chargers connected on 14 of 35 (40.0 percent) of their shots from the floor, including four of 10 from "long distance." From the free-throw line, neither team found the chari- ty stripe friendly, as Pike Cen- tral hit on just 10 of 17 tries (58.8 percent) from the un- guarded stripe, while Boon- ville was even cooler, putting home only three of their 10 op- portunities. "We still have a long way to go before we get where we need to be if we are going to win on a consistent basis," said Elliott after the game. "We played hard and nev- er quit, but we were only 10 of 17 from the free-throw line, and you can't win close games with that kind of free- throw percentage; however, I thought we did a great job against their press. "We only turned the ball over 10 times in a very phys- ical game, and we had some really bright spots—we just need to learn from our mis- takes. I was pleased with our effort, just not the final out- come! " The Chargers came out of the outing 0 -5, while the Pio- neers were 1-3 after the win.
