The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, December 23, 2020 A-3 LOCAL Call: 812-354-8500 Email: news@pressdispatch.net or bring in a hard copy: 820 E. Poplar Street, Petersburg Six popular health-based resolutions Resolutions that focus on health and fitness are made each year. Numerous peo- ple are eager to lose weight, improve their physical fit- ness levels or even stop hab- its that can hinder their men- tal or physical wellness. As the new year ticks closer, individu- als can explore these popular resolutions as they get on the path to better health. 1. Commit to quit. The American Cancer Society says about half of all Ameri- cans who keep smoking will die due to the habit. Smok- ing kills more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, guns, HIV, and illegal drugs combined. Smoking not only causes cancer, it also damag- es nearly every part the body, including the bones, repro- ductive organs, mouth, skin, eyes, and blood vessels. Quit- ting can help reverse the ef- fects of years of smoking. 2. Limit alcohol intake. The phrase "everything in moder- ation" applies to alcohol con- sumption. Excessive con- sumption of alcohol can lead to liver and kidney damage. When these organs are not functioning properly, they cannot filter toxins out of the body, resulting in potentially irreparable damage. Resolve to cut down on alcohol con- sumption if you are drinking more than two drinks per day. 3. Address stress. It's easy to underestimate the effects of stress on the mind and body. Left unchecked, stress can contribute to heart dis - ease, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure, says the Mayo Clinic. Resolving to re- duce stress by adopting cer- tain techniques can improve self-esteem and mood. 4. Exercise more readily. Physician Partners of Ameri- ca states that exercise can im- prove mood and sleep, help people control their weight, reduce the risk of heart dis- ease, improve bone and mus- cle strength, and potentially extend their lives. Resolving to exercise doesn't require dras- tic changes. Small steps can add up to big results. 5. Visit the doctor. Too often people put off going to the doc- tor until something is wrong with their health. It is much better to be proactive and avoid illness through testing and conversations with a phy- sician. Doctors may be able to recognize symptoms and risk factors that could be indica- tive of future illness. Routine physical exams also will check cholesterol and glucose levels, monitor blood pressure and in- clude other preventive care op- tions. 6. Improve your diet. Eat- ing more meals made at home and incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean protein into your meals can improve over- all health. Healthy changes top the list of New Year's resolutions each year. Certain resolutions can greatly improve overall health. No matter where you live. How helping others helps you Personal growth is at the heart of many New Year's res- olutions. Few paths to positive personal growth are more no- ble than resolving to help oth- ers through increased acts of generosity and kindness. According to Psychology Today, doing good for others, no matter how big or small the deed, feels good but also provides reciprocal benefits. The link between volunteer- ing and lower rates of depres- sion has been well-document- ed, and there is neural evi- dence from MRI studies sug- gesting a link between being generous and signs of happi- ness in the brain. The following are several ways to improve oneself by being more mindful of others. • Be aware of social issues. Read your local newspaper to stay up-to-date on the pulse of your community as well as the world. Educate yourself about current issues that are affect- ing people from all walks of life. Understanding the needs or plights of others may boost your willingness to get in- volved with nonprofit organi- zations. It also may make you more empathetic and compas- sionate toward other people. • Volunteer at a charity. Find a charitable group with which you can volunteer your time. This is a great way to support a cause you believe in and makes it possible for you to collaborate with others who are like-minded, potentially helping you make new friends. • Learn a new language. North America is a melt- ing pot that's home to peo- ple from many different parts of the world. Learning a new language may facilitate inter- actions with fellow communi- ty members who might not speak English as a first lan- guage. • Help someone you know. It's commendable to want to assist a charity or a global cause, but what about people close to you who may need a boost? Whether you're lug- ging boxes to help a friend move or babysitting a niece or nephew so their parents can enjoy a much-needed night out, when you help someone, those good deeds will return to you in time. When making resolutions, people should consider goals that involve helping others. While this assistance can ben- efit the people who are on the receiving end of the care and attention, those who are giv- ing of themselves also reap considerable rewards.
