The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, September 9, 2020 A-7 Letter to the Editor Can Democrats be pro-life? Court Report PASTOR Continued from page 6 it is likely that high-paying careers such as engineering, medicine, physics and com- puter technology are hermet- ically sealed off for life. There are relatively few black fighter jet pilots. There are stringent physical, char- acter and mental require- ments, which many black applicants could meet. But fighter pilots must also have a strong knowledge of air navigation, aircraft operat- ing procedures, flight the- ory, fluid mechanics, mete- orology and engineering. The college majors that help prepare undergraduates for a career as a fighter pilot in- clude mathematics, physical science and engineering. But if one graduates from high school without elemen- tary training in math, it is not likely that he will enroll in the college courses that would qualify him for fight- er pilot training. At many predominantly black high schools, not a sin- gle black student tests profi- cient in math and a very low percentage test proficient in reading; however, these schools confer a diploma that attests that the students can read, write and compute at a 12th-grade level and these schools often boast that they have a 70 percent and high- er graduation rate. They mis- lead students, their families and others by conferring fraudulent diplomas. What explains the fact that over 80 percent of pro- fessional basketball players are black, as are about 70 percent of professional foot- ball players? Only an idiot would chalk it up to diversi- ty and inclusion. Instead, it is excellence that explains the disproportionate numbers. Jewish Americans, who are just 3 percent of our popula- tion, win over 35 percent of the Nobel prizes in science that are awarded to Ameri- cans. Again, it is excellence that explains the dispropor- tionality, not diversity and inclusion. As my stepfather often told me, "To do well in this world, you have to come early and stay late." The Amazon ReInvent Con- ference, among the largest gathering of engineers and developers in the world, pro- vides a good snapshot of the challenge we face in bring- ing greater diversity to data analytics. Of the 65,000 par- ticipants in last year's confer- ence, only one to two percent were women. Why is this? Regrettably, the percentage of women graduating with a computer science degree in 2019 was less than 18 per- cent, the result of a steady de- cline since a high of 35 per- cent in the early 1980s. Yet the Bureau of Labor Statis- tics estimates that comput- er science jobs will increase again by 19 percent by 2026. There are only a few more women obtaining computer science degrees in raw num- bers that there were 30 years ago. America's adversaries are mounting increasingly so- phisticated disinformation campaigns as part of their cyber-warfare strategies. In January 2019, Russian Pres- ident Vladimir Putin stated that whoever controls AI will rule the world. Putin has es- tablished AI programs at top universities, along with a na- tional AI R&D center that monitors technical and so- cial trends in AI. China's government has al- so made big investments in AI and ML. In mid-March, Beijing's operatives pushed messages across social me- dia feeds so pervasively that the National Security Coun- cil issued an announcement via Twitter that these mes- sages were fake. America needs new aca- demic programs that focus on the study of data analyt- ics regarding U.S. foreign policy and national securi- ty. The University of New Mexico recently answered the call, introducing a mas- ter's level program focused on national and global securi- ty that blends data analytics with foreign policy expertise. The engineering department teaches many of the cours- es—an innovative approach to preparing our next genera- tion of foreign policy experts. The federal and state gov- ernments need to grasp that our national security de- pends on attracting people with advanced degrees in foreign policy and strong technical skills in computer and data science, AI and ML. America's "think tanks" also need to hire interns—espe- cially women—with techni- cal credentials to better pre- pare them to serve in the public sector as data ana- lysts. Finally, America sore- ly needs to forge public-pri- vate partnerships commit- ted to attracting women in technical fields such as com- puter and data science and helping them build foreign policy acumen. Absent that commitment, the U.S. can- not achieve its full potential to counter the dissemination of false information. By working to encour- age greater participation by women and educating our national security communi- ty about the specific skills women bring to our protect- ing our nation, we will field a well-rounded team, one bet- ter able to counter the grow- ing threats from disinforma- tion campaigns. The demands from congregants that more needs done while limiting how more can be do- ne is quickly becoming the last straw. The looming financial needs for pastors and staff is left unsaid. Will they see the handwriting on the wall before the axe falls, or get blindsided? What will a pas- tor do if the church commit- tee on finance tells them next year's salary will be 20 to 25 percent less? Sorry-take it or leave it. Oh, and by the way, we want two streaming ser- vices Sunday and Weekly Bi- ble Class on Zoom and do not forget the donuts. This is the old cliché "We can do more with less," or as one parishioner likes to opine "Your beating will con- tinue until morale improves." Pray for you pastor, the worship team/committee and realize that ridding your- self of your "troubled" pastor will change little if nothing! Think about it! by cities. One time our driver got lost while we were in Serbia and he entered deep into far away towns. This was when the wave of middle east im- migrants entered Europe and they walked long distances though the main highways. So buses were diverted to smaller towns. Still I thought the areas we wandered into were clean and just fine. One of the measures I use as a rule of thumb for gaging the quality of a city is how well the public restrooms are main- tained. For those who had the opportunity to travel a lot as well, I think you would agree with this comment. Hold on. USA is still the best in my opinion. Next time, I'll share the subject of the ten best states and ten best cities in the USA as of 2019. Let's un- buckle and get back to the re- al world. Wisdom of the week: I've heard this many times. "Home is where you make it. Flour- ish and bloom where the Good Lord plants you." Humor of the week: Some wise quotes: "When every- thing is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane." "I drive way too fast to wor- ry about my cholesterol." "If a psychic is really authen- tic, why do they have to ask for your name? " or "Why are there no psychic lottery win- ners? " "If everything seems to be going well, you have obvi- ously overlooked something." Have a great week! Respect for Human Dignity • Quality • Justice Stewardship • Compassionate Caring Ben Stillman, D.O. is now accepting new primary care patients at Petersburg Family Medicine, located at 1003 East Illinnois Street, Petersburg, IN. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Stillman, call 812-354-3458. Ben Stillman, D.O. Accepting New Patients With the selection of Kamala Har- ris by Joe Biden as his Vice-President just makes one more reason not to vote for the pro-abortion Biden-Harris tick- et. When Kamala Harris was Attorney General of California David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt went uncover and caught Planned Parenthood selling body parts from their abortion clinics for big mon- ey. Well instead of prosecuting Planned Parenthood for this devious scheme Ka- mala Harris who was the Attorney Gen- eral in California at the time and who re- ceived campaign money from Planned Parenthood went after these two under- cover news people in an attempt to pro- tect their friends in the abortion industry. Both Daleiden and Merritt have been in court for several years and have costs these two individuals millions of dollars to defend themselves against this vicious attacks by Kamala Harris and her suc- cessor in the Attorney General's Office Xavier Becerra. All because these two individuals caught Planned Parenthood red handed selling aborted body parts and Harris and Becerra wanted to pro- tect Planned Parenthood and their abor- tion business. Fifteen felony counts were originally filed against Sandra Merritt and David Daleiden of the Center for Medical Prog- ress by former California Attorney Gen- eral and current Democratic vice presi- dential candidate, Senator Kamala Har- ris. Seven Charges have been dropped and more may be dropped but these pro-abortion people are out to get these pro-life news people. Isn't it interesting that the people trying to find out what was going under the table at Planned Par- enthood are the ones the liberal Demo- crats are going after. What these Democrats are doing here is like what is going on in the major cities across the country where violent rioters and looters are being arrested and Dem- ocrat prosecutors are refusing to prose- cute these people and turning them loose to loot again. It is called selective prose- cution because it does not fit the Demo- crats' agenda. With the addition of Harris to the Dem- ocrat ticket it only cements abortion into their agenda as Biden has moved from a onetime supporter of the Hyde Amend- ment which cut off funding for abortion to now supporting abortion up to the time of birth. Once abortion at birth thought to be an outrage and evil may now be com- ing to an abortion clinic or hospital near you if this pro-abortion team of Biden and Harris have their way. In another show of what Kamala Harris is really thinking, during one of the hear- ings for a federal judgeship, she said this Catholic individual should not be con- sidered to serve on the federal court be- cause he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and anyone who belongs to this group should not be considered. She may be biased in other ways as well. We feel the rank and file of the Demo- crat Party does not believe in this outra- geous left wing agenda. But the Nation- al Democrat Party has been taken over by people who no longer put God first in their lives. It is time for the silent major- ity to rise up and voice their opposition at the ballot box. This brings up a question for all voters need to ponder before they cast their bal- lot in the Fall Election. Can I be Pro-Life and vote Democrat? The answer is a re- sounding No! And another question I pose to the voters, if you go ahead and vote for Biden-Harris, will God be pleased with you? You need to think about this.
