KNEE By Grace Miller Along State Highway 57, just outside of Oakland City, sits a family known as the Boneses. Drivers can spot this family of skeletons doing many fun, and sometimes ex- treme, activities, from riding in a parade to putting out a she shed fire. For the past two years, Rog- er and Robin Sermersheim have been creating and set- ting up these various scenari- os in their yard for the Bones family, which consists of Mr. and Mrs. Bones, son Bones Ju- nior (BJ) and their loyal dog. Roger Sermersheim said that he first came up with the idea after seeing a man in Mt. Olympus with a skeleton on a T V antenna. Liking the idea, the Sermersheims set up a scene around Halloween of Mr. Bones hanging off the roof with a fallen ladder be- neath him. That Christmas, a couple of reindeer joined the skeleton for the holidays. Since then, the Sermershe- ims have come up with a new idea every two or three weeks for the past two years. Roger said that most of the props for the skeletons come from one of their barns or are their children's old toys. "I have fun coming up with different ideas and then trying to find different things to use to get my ideas to come to life," he stated. The most ambitious set up the Sermersheims did was one of a camping scene, com- plete with a tent, glowing fire pit and marshmallows on the Boneses' sticks. Roger stated that his favorite set up was one of the earlier ones where Mrs. Bones pulled Mr. Bones on waterskis behind a jon boat. The latest scene features Mr. Bones diving into a pool and Mrs. Bones doing a cannon ball, the Facebook post stat- ing, "The Bones family had one final swim before the pool closes." The community greatly en- joys the Sermersheims' work. Roger said people will honk as they drive by, stop on the highway to take pictures or even run up into the yard to get photos with the skeletons and talk to the Sermersheims. Some people drive out of their way just to see what the Bones family is doing. "I enjoy mak- ing people smile through our silliness," said Roger. The Boneses have their own Facebook page called Bones & Family, where people can see pictures of the skele- tons and their adventures, as well as talk with fellow lovers of the Bones family. Keeping up with the
