The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, September 9, 2020 B-5 FOOTBALL Continued from page 1 field position, but the drive stalled after a couple attempts by Dent to connect with Gish. On third and six, inside the 50, Dent was sacked for a fourth and 12. Gish was the target for a first and ten down to the 15, but then attempts on the left side line to Gish went incomplete with two minutes remaining in the half. Raaf Jackson caught one deep in the endzone for the 35 -0 score and then an interception on a first and 15 for the Chargers set up a 24-yard run for a TD by Rebel Cameron Weigand as time expired. The Chargers took over on their own 36 in the ensu- ing third quarter kickoff, but an untimely fumble forced a punt on fourth and 18. South Spencer advanced the ball in- to Charger territory late in the third, but the Chargers recov- ered a fumble to take over on their own 22. Jagar Dent ran for a first and ten, and went in- to the fourth quarter with the ball, but failed to make good on the series near midfield. South Spencer drove the ball in on five places to a first and goal on the nine, and then Ry- lan Davis took it in from the nine for the 48 -0 final after the extra point. The Rebels stymied the Chargers on the ground, al- lowing just 21 yards on 20 car- ries. Jagar Dent had 10 yards and Wyatt Frasure had 11. In the passing department, Dent had 46 yards. There was five receptions on 13 attempts, with three Chargers on the receiving end. Colson Dil- lard had two receptions for 17 yards, Stephen Krieg was two for 12 yards and Julian Gish had one for 17 yards. Coach Dave Stephens said, "I think that when a team fac- es hard times, that it is import- ant for us to stick together. We are all frustrated by the way the season is going the past two games, but we are the on- ly ones that can get ourselves out of this hole we dug the last two games." Asked about the team be- ing 100 percent, coach said, "As of right now, we should be full strength. As far as play- ers go, Wyatt Frasure had a really good game defensive- ly. I was also happy with the way Jager Dent handled be- ing thrown in to a very diffi- cult situation. He handled it well and that says a lot about his mental toughness. He had to play quarterback this week for our starter." Coach Stephens said they found out Monday that Lars Utterback would not be play- ing Friday. He said they had a little lead time to prepare, un- like the last-minute loss of Wy- att Frasure the week before. "As far as Friday goes, we have a tough challenge against Southridge, #1 in 3A according to Sagarin ratings, when they come to our place. They are fast and physical. We have to come out and match their intensity. The great thing about being in the PAC is you get to test what you're made of by playing the best teams in the state. We look forward to this opportunity to compete against a champi- onship caliber program." It has been a long dry spell for Pike Central against South Spencer, including a loss at their hands on Weathers Field in 2019. It was the only win for the Rebels that year and with new head coach Jeff Daming, the losses contin- ued into the 2020 season, un- til hosting Pike Central. Pike Central came away from Fri- day like South Spencer did in 1986 when the Chargers post- ed a 24-0 win that followed un- scored upon wins over Wood Memorial, North Posey and Southridge. Bass Tourney won by Brock and Karsner Thursday's 63 Group Covid-19 Bass Tourney was won by the team of Keith Brock and Lou Karsner. Keith Brock won the big bass contest with a 6.6 pound- er, which is the big bass of the year. Alan Faith and Kenny Osgatharp took second, and Josh Braunecker and Josh Braunecker Sr. tied for third place with Beau Dil- lon and Dave Wilcox. Lady volleyball goes three sets at Reitz Nipped by Lady Rangers at home Reitz claimed a 25 -11, 25 - 15, 25 -10 win on their home court Monday and the For- est Park Lady Rangers got by with an 11-25, 21-25, 25 - 27 three-set win on the La- dy Charger floor on Tuesday night. Against Forest Park, Lady Charger varsity volleyball coach Stephanie Shedd com- mented, "The ladies played with heart and sweat in the 25 -27 third set. They almost pulled out the win. It seems like it takes us a few sets to get warmed up and then we are ready to play. We final- ly will have some practice time this week and more next week to take some time to work on skills and for im- provement. Erika Vinnedge had two aces, five kills and one block. Neeley Correll had six kills, one block and six digs. Kenzie Powell had 15 assists and Maddie Wil- liams scored three aces. We will continue to work on communication, defense and serving." The junior varsity squad fell to Reitz 20 -25, 13-25 and the C team lost 11- 25, 16 -25. Regarding the C team, Coach said, "The girls came out strong and fizzled out around our 10th point. We let number seven from Forest Park serve too many straight points. She was finding our holes and we were not communicat- ing. The C team girls did well considering we don't play many C games. Their practice is infused with the JV team, so we have to share the court. Taking that into consideration, they did a great job. We just need to work on serve receive and stopping points from add- ing for the other team too quickly." In the JV loss, Macey Stil- well had 11 digs and zero serve receive errors. Emi- ly Krieg had one assist, two kills and zero attack errors. Delaney Welch had six as- sist and got all her serves in the court. The girls played well in the first set, but came back out slow in the second set. In the road trip loss to Re- itz, coach said, "The girls played tough the second set. We had a lot of good rallies and worked hard as a team. We communi- cated better and moved on the court better, too. Reitz came to play and had great hitters and serving. Ericka Vinnedge made three kills and one block. Riley Morgan played back row well with ze- ro serve receive errors and Jaize Mills had two kills." Regarding the JV match, coach said, "Addie Faulk did a really nice job serving and playing back row. Alaina McClellan had three kills and zero attack errors. She also had five digs. Delaney Welch notched four digs and four assists. We came out timid and not ready to play. We will continue to work on being aggressive at the net and receiving serves from our opponents." Teams split in Tell City Round Robin The Lady Chargers played in the weekend Tell City Round Robin matches, fall- ing to Tell City and Mt. Ver- non in varsity action, but winning both junior varsity games. In varsity action, the La- dy Chargers lost in four sets by scores of 13-25, 25 -21, 11- 25 and 18 -25. Coach Stepha- nie Shedd said, "We played really well in the second set. I was very proud of how we moved and were enthusiastic throughout the set. Neeley Correll had three aces and 13 digs. Lexie Onyett had 13 digs. Haylie Fulcher had three kills and one block as- sist. Kenzie Powell had three aces, 13 digs, five kills and 14 assists." Against Mt. Vernon, the girls fell in three sets: 13-25, 8 -25, 8 -25. Coach Shedd said, "We did not work as a team. The ladies did not communi- cate, and we lacked momen- tum and confidence. Some- times we lack teamwork and the ability to come together as a unit while on the court. We will continue to work on leadership skills and com- munication. Mt. Vernon had really great hitting and they found our holes. Neely Cor- rell had two kills and Eri- ka Vinnedge had four." The team played Tuesday night, which was senior night. The junior varsity Lady Chargers bettered Tell City 25 -16, 25 -11 and beat Mt. Ver- non 21-25, 25 -18, 15 -6. Liber- ty Taylor had five aces and two kills against Tell City. Amilia Ahner and Alaina McClellan both had two kills, and McClellan had two aces. In the Mt. Vernon three- set win, Delaney Welch had three aces and Emily Krieg three kills. Addie Faulk had one ace and three kills. Alaina McClellan had one ace and four kills. Coach said, "The girls were on fire all morning. They played hard and played as a team. They worked together and they got results on the court. I am so proud of the way they played." At Reo, Huck claimed a 6 - 0, 6 -3 win over Embry, but had trouble with Grey in a 1- 6, 0 -6 loss on Tuesday. Pike Central's Erika Vinnedge and Jaize Mills go high in the air for a block at the net during the Char- gers' win over Shoals on Thursday night.
