A-8 Local Wednesday, Februar y 5, 2020 The Press-Dispatch By Andy Heuring A boxing club has formed in Pike County and on Sat- urday, 10 -year-old Brody Fiscus will make the club's competitive debut in Terre Haute. Fiscus was the impetus of the club A & B Boxing. The A stands for Arnold and the B for Baumgart. Scott Arnold, who is a Pe- tersburg Policeman, as well as a member of the Amer- ican Martial Arts Hall of Fame, has a long history in fighting sports. He said he started in kickboxing, where he competed profes- sionally. He also operated a karate/kickboxing school in Vincennes. That is where he and Barbara Baumgart met each other. Baumgart took a self-defense class at Arnold's school in Knox County and liked it. "I have always had a passion for this kind of thing," said Baumgart. She then start- ed taking classes to be an instructor. While she was doing that, her grandson, Brody, went with her to Arnold's classes and he started kickboxing. Arnold decided to go in- to the law enforcement field and was hired by the Bick- nell Police Department. So he said he decided to step away from the kickboxing field and close his school. After six months at Bick- nell, he was hired by Pe- tersburg. In the meantime, Baumgart said she started a kickboxing cardio class. She said Brody said he was interested in boxing. So Baumgart said she decided to set up a gym in her base- ment and they started doing boxing training together. "Brody is my step-grand- son and this is something he and I can do together." "He told me, 'Nana, not too many people have a Nana who wrestles and box- es with them.'" Around August of last year, Arnold decided to take Brody under his wing and train him for boxing. Then about a month ago, they started taking students for their boxing club. Arnold said some of their students are training and want to box competitively, while others just want to learn it, and use it to train and get in shape. Arnold has about six adults training, as well as about four kids ages 10 to 16. Baumgart has women who use boxing to train and stay in shape. She said none of them have any intention on boxing competitively. She also had some kids ages six to 10 who are learn- ing to box. "I just teach the basic stances and punch- es. Scott teaches the ones wanting to compete," said Baumgart. Arnold said it is a big mo- ment for them that Fiscus will make the boxing club's competitive debut this weekend. Anyone interested in join- ing the club can reach them through Facebook at A&B Boxing.
