We received no postcards this week at Sweets Column, Winslow, IN 47598. Winslow Patoka River must have dropped because Winslow hasn't had the rain or snow that Southern Indi- ana has gotten this past week. The only weather we saw and felt was a few snow flurries that lasted for about 15 minutes and the rain stayed west and south of I-64. The temps began with cold 30s, but the 40s rose again by the end of the week. The big game day saw temps in the 50s, with sunshine for the ground- hog to see his shadow. Oh yes, we had some rain Friday morning, north of us has snow or a mixture. Last weekend, Jan. 24, Laura spent the weekend with Kyana, going plac- es for Laura's 39th birthday. Norm and I also got to enjoy her company as we played Yahtzee, and she is get- ting much better rolling those 5 dice to get that Yahtzee score of 50 or more. Chocolate chip cookies were baked and were devoured in no time. I know at one time in your life you have woken up to a flat tire, but as my Dad has said, "It's on- ly flat on one side." But Norm woke up Sunday to a flat front tire that had to be changed and on Mon- day, it was plugged. So, we discussed since those tires are worn, we might as well get new treads and Jim's Tractor Works was helpful in our search. On Wednesday, we got new treads that have a bright blue letter- ing that can be seen from afar. Thanks, Jim, we love our new treads. Norm noticed that some of the flow- ers in the beds are getting greener stems or blades and they should be dormant, but with the warm temps, they got confused. I hope they don't bloom too early as some are July 4 blooms. February is a busy month with two presidents to have a birthday, Ground- hog day, the big game, Valentin's day, Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday, plus it's also a leap year with 29 days. Norm and I finally got out to Greg's to cut up some trees and they did come at a great time. Don't know what kind of tree, but it's very hard wood, be- cause you cannot use a moll to split it into. Thanks, Greg, and I appreciate the help from Wienner, who could have slept but helped out some friends. Not much more to talk about, so the lights are about to dim for this week. Keep an eye on family and friends, slow down and see the beauty in your area. Always, smile, wave and say "hi" to everyone you see this week. REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS Boyd Ross conveys to Michael J. With the ever-chang- ing genetics of weeds, more and more species are becoming resist- ant to traditional herbicide pro- grams. In the late 1990s and first decade of the new millennium, glyphosate-based spraying with products such as Roundup served as king and court. Today, that technol- ogy is widely disregarded by many weeds who are either unaffected or very mildly affected by the her- bicide. Other herbicides exist that still have great action against weeds that shrug off glyphosate. Dicam- ba-based herbicide programs began for soybeans in 2017, and this year marks the wide-spread adoption of triple mode of action products. With these possibilities comes risk, how- ever, and the responsibility for in- creased training. For many years, farmers who wanted to spray any products with real action against a broad set of weed species, dubbed restrict- ed-use pesticides, have needed a pri- vate pesticide license. This license requires passing a test and attend- ing six hours of continuing educa- tion over a five-year period. When dicamba sprays in soybeans were made possible through develop- ment of dicamba-tolerant soybean varieties, drift potential was ad- dressed through requiring an addi- tional, annual at least one hour of education on the stringent rules re- quired for lawful dicamba spraying. The option to trade in dicamba for triple-stacked soybean that are not harmed by glyphosate, glufosinate, or 2,4-D is a very attractive option for growers. However, rules exist for spraying those beans that are simi- lar to those for dicamba. The root cause of additional edu- cation requirements for new tech- nologies is the capacity for herbicide drift. Drift is simply off-target move- ment, similar to the way an unexpect- Down on the Farm Pesticide use in agriculture Continued on page 7
