Environmental education workshops available online Indiana teachers, youth group leaders, home school parents, and others who want to educate children about the environment can now take a Project Learning Tree (PLT) workshop, online, at their convenience. PLT, for which the Indi- ana DNR Division of For- estry is the state's sponsor, is an international, award- winning environmental edu- cation program for children in grades Pre-K through 12. PLT's activities have been developed by teachers, for teachers. Through PLT, stu- dents gain knowledge and develop critical thinking skills while participating in hands-on, multi-disciplin- ary activities. PLT's well- organized activities teach to Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Math, as well as STEM, and are correlated to both state and national aca- demic standards. Participants in a PLT workshop will learn how to use the activities and receive a digital copy of the PLT K-8 curriculum guide. Other ma- terials and opportunities will become available upon com- pletion of the course. Cost is $40 per person. Four pro- fessional growth points will be awarded upon successful completion of the course. An outline of the course is in- cluded within the introduc- tory pages. To enroll in the course, teachers/youth leaders simply log in to: shop.plt. org. Once the course has been purchased, prospec- tive participants go to "my account>my content" and click on K-8 course "online training" where they will be directed to the actual course. For more information con- tact PLT coordinator Donna Rogler at the DNR Division of Forestry/PLT at 317-234- 5143. Project Learning Tree® (www.plt.org) is the envi- ronmental education pro- gram of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. PLT pro- vides educators with com- prehensive environmental education curriculum re- sources that can be inte- grated into lesson plans for all grades and subject areas. Developed in 1976, PLT has an international network of more than 500,000 trained educators using PLT mate- rials that cover the total en- vironment. Public comment sought on Statewide Forest Action Plan draft The DNR Division of For- estry is working with con- servation groups and forest stakeholders to update the 2010 Forest Action Plan, a 10 -year strategic document that considers the condi- tions and trends of forest re- sources in the state and pro- vides long-term strategies to address threats. The plan encompasses Indiana's ap- proximately 5 million acres of forestland, 84% of which is privately owned and 16 % of which is owned by public institutions including feder- al, sta te and local govern- ments. Stakeholders including Hoosier National Forest, the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife, USDA's Natural Re- sources Conservation Ser- vice, and the Indiana Forest & Woodland Owners Asso- ciation, professional forest- er associations. About 30 other conservation and en- vironmental organizations also have contributed to the update process through in- volvement with the Indiana Forest Stewardship Coordi- nating Committee. A draft update of the plan is available for public com- ment at dnr.IN.gov/forest- ry/10319.htm until March 27. The final plan will be re- leased early this summer. A series of public meet- ings will be scheduled to dis- cuss the draft. Dates and lo- cations will be posted online when available. More information about the Forest Action Plan up- date process and engaging Indiana's forest stakehold- ers is available on the For- est Action Plan webpage: dnr.IN.gov/forestry/5436. htm. net edition PressDispatch.net/Subscribe It's the paper.
