According to the report, at 1:25 a.m., Gibson County Central Dispatch received a report of a suspicious vehi- cle located in the parking lot of the Marathon on Ind. 57, near Oakland City. The reporting caller want- ed officers to perform a wel- fare check on a white Ford Taurus that had been sitting in the parking lot for 45 min- utes. Upon arriving, Deputy Lo- ren Barchett and Francisco Officer Michael Collins ap- proached the vehicle and identified the occupants as 53-year-old Darrell Mitch- ell, of Marengo, and 43-year- old Nicole Powell, of Oak- land City. While attempting to speak with Mitchell, offi- cers observed him attempt to conceal marijuana in the vehicle's center console, ac- cording to the report. At that point, Deputy Barchett, with the assistance of Offi- cer Collins and Deputy Mi- chael Rose, began a road- side investigation. At the conclusion of their inves- tigation, Deputy Barchett placed Mitchell and Pow- ell into custody and trans- ported them to the Gibson County Jail. Upon arriving at the Gibson County Jail, Mitchell was charged with Possession of Methamphet- amine, Possession of Mari- juana and Possession of Par- aphernalia. Powell was charged with Carrying a Handgun With- out a License, Possession of Scheduled Drug and Posses- sion of Methamphetamine. Both have posted a $750 bond. Leal named to Augustana College's Dean's List Alvaro Leal, of Oak- land City, majoring in Business Administration International Business, was among the students named to Augustana Col- lege's 2019 -20 Fall semes- ter Dean's List. Somerville man charged with battery Saturday David Passwaiter, 43, of Somerville, was charged with two counts of battery Feb. 1 at 12:44 a.m., after Gibson County Central Dis- patch received a 911 report of a disturbance in the 10000 block of East Illinois Street in Somerville. Upon arriving in the area, Deputy Michael Rose spoke with all parties at the resi- dence and began an investi- gation into the incident. At the conclusion of his investi- gation, Deputy Rose placed Passwaiter into custody. At the conclusion of Deputy Rose's investigation, Pass- waiter was transported to the Gibson County Jail, where he was charged with two counts of battery. He remains in cus- tody on a $750 bond. Assisting Deputy Rose in his investigation was Ser- geant John Fischer and Dep- uty Brian Naas. According to the probable cause affidavit from the In- diana State Police, 461 pag- es of text messages from the alleged victim's cell phone described sexual activity, drinking, smoking Juul (a vaping product) and smok- ing marijuana. According to the ISP's af- fidavit, both discussed their ages before intercourse; the couple allegedly met at an underage drinking party at an Oakland City residence. Williams was arrested at his residence without inci- dent and taken to the Gibson County Jail, where he is cur- rently being held on bond. Oakland City Police as- sisted the investigation. Wood Memorial Wood Memorial performs well at the ISSMA District Solo/Ensemble competition Wood Memorial had seven students participate in the ISSMA vocal/piano District Solo/Ensemble competition Saturday, Feb. 1. The students did a great job and brought home one bronze medal, five silver medals and one gold medal. Wood Memorial was represented well by these students and all of the hard work they put into practices and performances.
