Pike Central swimming competes at Tecumseh Relays By Dennis Marshall Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central swimming teams competed at the Tecumseh High School Kolin Clutter Memo- rial Swimming Relays on Satur- day, Dec. 7. Both of Pike Central's teams had nice showings with the boys' plac- ing second and the girls' finishing third. "These relays are a chance for the swimmers to have a little fun and swim relays they will not see the rest of the season," Pike Cen- tral coach Travis Cochren said. "We use this as an opportunity to test some of our swimmers in dif- ferent strokes and events." Gibson Southern won the boys' division with 104 team points. Pike Central finished with 70 and was followed by Tecumseh (34), Forest Park (28) and Evansville Christian School (18). "We were missing a strong se- nior to SAT testing," Cochren said. "Add him back into the mix, and we could have been right up there knocking on the door with Gibson Southern in these relays." The boys won two events. Draven Readle, Isaac Burdette, A J Hill and Brayden Cooper won the 400 -yard medley relay in 5:10.84 seconds; and Coleman Henson, Readle and Burdette won the 150 breaststroke relay in 1:50.31. The Chargers had four teams earn silver: Burkhart, Readle and Cooper were second in the 150 butterfly relay in 1:41.57; Bur- dette, Readle and Henson were second in the 150 backstroke re- lay in 1:48.91; Cooper, Henson, Burkhart and Hill were second in the 400 freestyle in 4:13.75; Coo- per, Burdette, Henson, Readle, Michael Burkhart, Noah Russell, Hill and Tyler Kirby were second in the 400 (8x50) freestyle relay in 3:56.62. Kirby, Theising, Burdette and Russell were fifth in the 250 free- style relay. Gibson Southern also won the girls' division with a score of 143. Tecumseh was second with 70 and Pike Central was third with 57. The Chargers were followed by Forest Park (26) and Evansville Christian School (20). The Pike Central girls also won two events. Gladish, Sallee, Fenwick and Keeker were sixth in the 250 free- style in 2:35.05. "Despite missing two of our strongest swimmers to SAT test- ing, we placed third overall in the relays, coming in just three points shy of second place," Cochren said. "We easily could have tak- en the second place finish with a better outcome in one single relay. If you add the two swimmers we were missing, we would have made a much stronger push for first, but may have still not caught up with Gibson Southern." CHARGERS COMPETE IN TRIANGULAR AT BOONVILLE Pike also competed in a triangu- lar meet with Boonville and Gib- son Southern on Thursday, Dec. 5 at BHS. Boonville won the boys' divi- sion with 157 team points. Gibson Southern was second with 85 and Pike Central was third with 75. "Boys fell to third, but with a couple changes and better fin- ishes, (they) easily could have moved up into second," Cochren said "They swam a pretty strong meet. With a little more work in the pool and building them up, we will see their results continue to improve." The boys didn't have any indi- vidual winners, but they did have multiple second-place finishers. Readle placed second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:45.56, and Sam Theising was sixth. Gibson Southern won the girls' division with 124 points. Pike Cen- tral was second with 100 and Boon- ville was third with 96. "I believe our girls are very ca- pable of beating these teams when we see them again later in the sea- son," Cochren said. "We had one strong swimmer out Thursday, and with a few line-up changes, I think we could have won this meet." Riley, McKinney, Meyer and Charlotte Dudenhoeffer won the 200 medley relay in 2:19.00. The team of Hunt, Keeker, Bailey and Gladish were fourth. Riley also won the 100 back- stroke in 1:14.78. Bailey was third in 1:20.22.
