The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade volley- ball team posted back-to- back three-set victories over Wood Memorial and Prince- ton to place first in the Wood Memorial Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 29. WOOD MEMORIAL: Delaney Welch had a team- high 11 points off serve as the Lady Chargers defeated Wood Memorial 25 -19, 24- 25, 15 -6. In the first set, Pike Cen- tral scored the first five points, including four fol- lowing serves by Welch, and extended its least to 11 points – at 16 -5 – before the Lady Trojans rolled off four straight points to close to within 16 -9. Wood Memorial would narrow the deficit to four points – at 20 -16 – but the Lady Chargers answered by scoring four of the next five points, including two follow- ing serves by Liberty Taylor, to stretch their lead to 24-17 while taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, the La- dy Trojans jumped out to a 6 -0 lead before Pike Central scored five straight points, including four following serves by Ashlyn Shoultz, to cut the deficit to 6 -5. A fter a 5 -0 scoring run extended Wood Memorial's lead to 11-5, the Lady Char- gers rattled off four straight points to close back to with- in 11-9. The Lady Trojans would stretch their lead back out to as many as four points – at 13-9 and 14-10 – before Pike Central scored five of the next six points, includ- ing two following serves by Taylor, to pull even at 15 -15. A fter Wood Memorial scored to take a 16 -15 lead, the Lady Chargers scored seven straight points, in- cluding five following serves by Welch, to surge ahead 22- 16. The Lady Trojans, how- ever, would rally, scoring eight of the next nine points to surge ahead 24-23. A fter Pike Central scored to pull even at 24-24, a sideout gave Wood Memorial the winning point, tying the match at 1-1. Leading 4-3 in the tie-breaking third set, the Lady Chargers scored eight straight points, including seven following serves by Reagan Craig, to extend their lead to 12-3. The Lady Trojans would get no closer than eight points the rest of the game. Craig totaled seven points off serve for Pike Central while Taylor added six and Shoultz and Alyna Sharp had five each. PRINCETON: Welch had a team-high 25 points off serve while Shoultz add- ed 10 more to lead Pike Cen- tral to a 20 -25, 25 -8, 15 -13 victory over Princeton. With the first set tied at 12-12, the Lady Tigers scored five of the next six points to take a 17-13 lead. Pike Central would pull back to within two points – at 19 - 17 and 22-20 – before Princ- eton scored the last three points to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. The Lady Chargers rolled off nine straight points – all following serves by Welch – to take a 9 -0 lead in the second set. A fter Prince- ton rattled off three points to close to within 9 -3, Pike Central scored nine points in a row, including eight fol- lowing serves by Shoultz, to extend its lead to 18 -3 while cruising to the match-tying victory. Then, with the tie-break- ing third set tied at 11-11, the Lady Chargers scored three straight points, in- cluding two following serves by Shoultz, to take a 14-11 lead. A fter Princeton scored back-to-back points to close to within 14-13, Pike Cen- tral scored the match-win- ning point on a sideout. Taylor had three points off serve while Craig had two. "The girls fought through both games," said Pike Cen- tral eighth grade coach Oliv- ia Leighty, whose team im- proved to 7-5. "They played as a team with confidence and heart. No doubt the girls deserved this win, and they earned it. I'm very proud of each and every one of them and their contributions to the big win." WOOD MEMORIAL: Haley Fulcher had a team- high 25 points off serve – in- cluding eight on ace serves – as Pike Central defeated Wood Memorial 25 -22, 24- 25, 15 -4. Trailing 4-2 in the first set, the Lady Chargers scored seven straight points, in- cluding six following serves by Fulcher, to take a 9 -4 lead. Pike Central would ex- tend its lead to as many as six points – at 13-7 – before the Lady Trojans went on a 7-2 scoring run to close to within 15 -14. Then, leading 18 -17, Pike Central scored five of the next seven points, includ- ing three following serves by Brailey Mills, to open up a 23-18 lead. Wood Memorial would rally, scoring four straight points to close to within 23- 22, before the Lady Char- gers tallied the final two points of the game, includ- ing the final one following a serve by Addy Russell, to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of- three match. In the second set, the La- dy Trojans would lead by as many as seven points – at 20 -13 – before Pike Central scored nine straight points, including eight following serves by Fulcher, to take a 22-20 lead. Wood Memorial would rally to tie the score at 22- 22, 23-23 and 24-24 before scoring the game-winning point to tie the match at 1-1. In the tie-breaking third set, the Lady Chargers – leading 2-1 – scored 10 straight points, including nine following serves by Ful- cher, to build up a 12-1 lead. The Lady Trojans would get no closer than nine points the rest of the match. Mills had six points off serve for the Lady Chargers while Russell added four, in- cluding one on an ace serve. Lexie Onyett and Mills had six and four kills, respective- ly, while Karley Kavanaugh dished out a team-high eight assists. "The team knew they had to pull together and play tough our first match against Wood Memorial, because we'd lost to them in the regular season," Pike Central seventh grade coach Kinsey Barrett said. "Their movement and passing was some of the best I've seen out of them." "In tight games, it's easy to forget about your skills and get sloppy with free balls but these girls never did and kept setting the ball up to try and get kills," Bar- rett added. "It was absolute- ly wonderful to see! It was a well-fought match from both teams with several long ral- lies back and forth that kept us on the edge of our seats the whole time." On- yett, who had a team-high seven kills, scored three points off serve – all on ace serves. Fulcher and Russell both had three points off serve, including two on ace serves. Kavanaugh added a team-high 11 set-assists. "The girls played a great game against Princeton as well," said Barrett, whose team improved to 8 -4. "They knew they had to come out strong and get ahead quick. They were not willing to come home without a tro- phy, and I'm so proud of their drive to win! Kenzie Rudolph photo PCMS 6th grade volleyball team drops losses to Vincennes Clark, Haubstadt The Pike Central Mid- dle School sixth grade vol- leyball team slipped to 3-4 with a 15 -25, 25 -23, 15 -10 loss at Vincennes Clark on Wednesday, Sept. 26, and a 25 -16, 22-25, 15 -8 loss at Haubstadt on Thursday, Sept. 27. Vincennes Clark 2, Pike Central 1 The Lady Chargers scored nine of the first 10 points, including five fol- lowing serves by Laken Sorgius and three more following serves by Myra Hensler, to take a 9 -1 lead in the first set. Vincennes Clark would close to within seven points twice – at 9 -2 and 12-5 – be- fore Pike Central rattled off four straight points, includ- ing three following serves by Riley Moore, to extend its lead to 16 -5. A fter the Lady Alices closed to within eight points – at 16 -8 and 17-9 – Pike Central scored four consecutive points, includ- ing three following serves by Sorgius, to take a 21-9 lead while cruising to the first-set victory. The second set started off well for the Lady Char- gers, who scored six of the first seven points, includ- ing three following serves by Hensler and two follow- ing serves by Sorgius. However, Vincennes Clark would rally, scoring three straight points to turn an 11-9 deficit into a 12-11 lead. Pike Central would score the next four points, includ- ing three following serves by Sorgius, to retake the lead, 15 -12. Following an exchange of points, the Lady Alices went on a 5 -0 run to take an 18 -17 lead. Pike Central would sub- sequently score three straight points, including two following serves by Emma Hunt, to take a 20 - 18 lead. However, with the La- dy Chargers holding a 23- 21 lead, Vincennes Clark scored four straight points to even the match at one game each. In the tie-breaking third set, the Lady Alices – trailing 8 -7 – scored five straight points to take a 12-8 lead. A fter Pike Cen- tral closed to within two points – at 12-10 – Vin- cennes Clark scored three straight points to finish off the Lady Chargers. Sorgius led the Lady Chargers with 13 points off serve while Hensler added nine. Moore had five points off serve. Karly Morson and Hunt added three and two, respectively. In the B match, Lillian Mann had a team-high 13 points off serve in a 25 - 22, 25 -16 victory over Vin- cennes Clark. Lily Brink- man had seven points off serve as the Lady Char- gers improved to 1-4. "I am so proud of the B team," Lady Chargers sixth grade coach Steph- anie Shedd said. "They served excellent and com- municated on the court. Hopefully, this win will boost their confidence." Haubstadt 3, Pike Central 1 In the first set, Pike Cen- tral led by as many as four points – at 10 -6 – before the Lady Elites rallied to tie the score at 10 -10. A fter the Lady Char- gers scored three straight points to surge ahead 13- 10, including two follow- ing serves by Moore, Haub- stadt scored six of the next eight points to take its first lead at 16 -15. Pike Central would tie the score at 16 -16, but the Lady Elites tallied nine straight points to take a 1- 0 lead in the best-of-three match. Trailing 14-12 in the sec- ond set, the Lady Chargers scored five straight points, including four following serves by Hunt, to take a 17-14 lead.
