B-2 Sports Wednesday, October 3, 2018 The Press-Dispatch "It was truly an awesome experience," said Pike Cen- tral head coach Jarrod Gide- on. "The course was immac- ulate and it was great to get to accompany Natalie. "While she didn't play as well as she wanted, it certain- ly didn't take away from the great season that she had, arguably the best season ev- er had by an individual golf- er in Pike Central history, boy or girl," Gideon added. "She is the first Pike Central golfer to advance to the state championship, and that goes to show how unbelievably dif- ficult it is to make it to that point." On Friday, Bohnert record- ed two pars, 10 bogeys and six double bogeys to finish the first round with a 22-over- par 94. On Saturday, Bohnert had six pars, five bogeys, five double bogeys, one quadru- ple bogey and one quintru- ple bogey to finish the second round with a 24-over-par 96. "I think most of Natalie's struggles at State came from the unfamiliarity of hitting the ball off of bent grass fair- ways," Gideon said. "If you aren't used to it, it can be very tough as they are very tight, and probably shorter than many of the greens that we played throughout the season." "I am very proud of her, and what she accomplished should set a precedent for other current and future golf- ers at Pike Central that hard work and dedication can real- ly lead to great things," Gide- on added. "She put the time in and deserved every acco- lade she received this year." Westfield junior Jocelyn Burch finished first overall with a one-under-par score of 143. Fort Wayne Leurs junior Madeleine Pape and Evans- ville North senior Katelyn Skinner tied for second with five-over-par scores of 149. Skinner was also named the recipient of the Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance's Mental Attitude Award by the IHSA A Executive Com- mittee during the awards cer- emony. Evansville North won its fourth state champion- ship in five years, tying the school for second-most girls' golf state titles in state histo- ry. The Huskies finished with a team score of 605, including a state finals record of 297 on Saturday, breaking the previ- ous mark of 299 shot during the first round last year by Zi- onsville. Zionsville finished second this year with a team score of 612 while Carmel placed third with a team score of 633.
