Washington at Jasper GAME OF OCTOBER 6 Area Game Martin County at Dugger Union Southern, turned the ball over a total of four times, in- cluding three on fumbles. "When you face a team that's big and physical, you can't give them extra op- portunities on top of that," Chargers head coach Dave Stephens said. "You've got to take care of the things that you can take care of to mit- igate their physical advan- tage." The Titans scored touch- downs on each of their nine first-half possessions – in- cluding one on a 75 -yard kickoff return by Ben Butler following a safety – to take a 65 -0 halftime lead. Pike Central's best scor- ing opportunity during the first half was an eight- play, 53-yard drive from its own 24-yard line to Gib- son Southern's 23-yard line that ended with a lost fum- ble with 5:18 left in the first quarter. "We hit them for a first down on the right side," Ste- phens said. "We tried the ex- act same thing on the left side the next play, and fum- bled it." Taking possession of the ball at the start of the sec- ond half, the Chargers drove from their own 27-yard line to the Titans' 12-yard line before – on 4th-and-11 – lin- ing up to attempt a 30 -yard field goal with 7:00 left in the third period. However, a fumble on the snap from center was recov- ered by Gibson Southern junior defensive back Ky- ler Gammon at the Titans' 20 -yard line. Following a scoreless third quarter, Gibson South- ern extended its lead to 72-0 on a 20 -yard touchdown run by junior running back Tuck- er Boes and the point-after kick by junior placekicker Jake Novotny with 11:11 left in the fourth period. Starting at its own 31-yard line following the ensuing kickoff, Pike Central staged a 14-play, 69 -yard scoring drive capped by a two-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Mario Fields with 4:00 remaining in the game. Fields led the Chargers offensively, completing 11 of 19 passes – with no in- terceptions – for 100 yards while carrying the ball 15 times for 63 yards. Junior wide receiver Con- nor O'Neal caught eight passes for 64 yards and se- nior Judah Leathco had three receptions for 36 yards while senior running back Eli Coleman totaled 28 yards on 20 carries. "I was happy with our ef- fort," Stephens said. "I just was disappointed with the fact that we didn't give our- selves enough of a chance to compete because we didn't execute the things we need- ed to execute." Pike Central will return to Campbell Field for its fi- nal home game of the regu- lar season to take on defend- ing Class 2A state champion Southridge. "That's why you decide to play football at Pike Cen- tral, is to have home games versus top five, top 10 teams in the state," Stephens said. "I mean, that's what's great about our conference. You're only going to play against the best competition in the state. And if you're wanting to play football at Pike Cen- tral, you'll get an opportu- nity to test yourself against the best. So we're excited about the opportunity to go out and compete with them. We're excited to see where we're at and what we can do." Friday night's game also marks the final regular-sea- son home game for the Chargers' seven seniors – Eli Coleman, Lane Doades, Ben Hess, James Hughes, Judah Leathco, Randy Pow- ell and Braxton Rice, Ste- phens noted. "It's important for me to let everybody know that were hoping to change this program long term, and these guys are the guys who decided – knowing it was go- ing to be a rebuild – to come out and be the guys to lay the foundation for change," Stephens said. "I'll forever be indebted to these young men and I'll never forget them. I'm excited for them and what they've done for our program, and what they mean to our program." A 60 -yard touchdown pass by Sorgius to Peyton Howald gave the Chargers a 6 -0 lead on the game's first play from scrimmage. Southridge subsequent- ly followed by putting to- gether a scoring drive of its own to take an 8 -6 lead enroute to a 16 -6 halftime advantage. Pike Central scored again in the second half on a 40 -yard touchdown pass from Sorgius to Cole Parks. "We hung in there pret- ty well, but mistakes just killed us," said Char- gers eighth grade coach Jeremy Howald, whose team slipped to 1-5. "The kids played hard, but we couldn't overcome our own mistakes." Pike Central will re- turn to action on Thurs- day, Oct. 4, at South Spen- cer, with the seventh grade game scheduled to kick off at 6:30 p.m., Eastern time. ed Pike Central 1-0. "We're hoping to have a good practice Monday and Tuesday, work on a few things that they did, watch some film, and then we've got a few different things we want to give a different look against them," Western said. "I think it's going to give us a good chance." The first-round bye, West- ern noted, means that the Chargers will be just one win away from playing for the sec- tional title on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. "I'm excited about that," Western said. "The most excited I am is that we get that Monday and Tuesday to practice instead of playing on Monday." Pike Central 3, Southridge 1 Senior Austin Holder, ju- nior Ethan Scott and soph- omore Hunter Capehart scored one goal apiece to lead Pike Central to a 3-1 vic- tory over host Southridge on Thursday, Sept. 27. Scott, senior Hayden Kabrick and junior Jersey Mills had one assist each, while junior goalie Noah Whann recorded nine saves. "This was a great win against a really good South- ridge team, a game that would determine third place in the conference," Western said. "A back-and-forth game the first 20 minutes, we were able to score our first goal when Hayden Kabrick, Gabe Caldwell and Ethan Scott connected a string of passes that ended in an Austin Hold- er goal. Not long after, Ethan Scott scored a fantastic goal from about 25 yards out." "The second half, we knew Southridge was going to bring up another offen- sive player that could cause us problems," Western con- tinued. "He scored one but we were able to defend with plenty of numbers for most of the half and Hunter Cape- hart scored on a nice count- er attack. We did a great job executing our game plan and shutting down two of the top scorers in the conference. The defense was really sol- id all night and Noah Whann made a couple of top-notch saves. I was pretty happy with how we played and think we are moving in the right di- rection going into sectional." Pike Central 7, Wood Memorial 1 Seniors Christian Benson and Hayden Kabrick and ju- nior Ethan Scott scored two goals each while junior Car- son Johnson added anoth- er as Pike Central defeated host Wood Memorial 7-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 26. Scott and senior Austin Holder dished out two as- sists apiece while Benson and Kabrick added one each. Ju- nior goalie Noah Whann had eight saves. "Wood Memorial came out in this game and played really well and we didn't re- spond how we should have right away," Western said. "We were keeping some pos- session but couldn't get any- thing going in the attacking third of the field." The game, Western noted, remained scoreless until ap- proximately six minutes were left in the first half. "Then we showed how dy- namic our offense can be," Western said. "We scored four goals in the final six min- utes of the first half. In the second half, we created a lot of chances and were able to put a few more away." GOAL Continued from page 1
