Poplar Street, Petersburg The Pike Central High School volleyball team won two out of four best- of-three matches during the First Savings Bank Invitational hosted by Vincennes Lincoln High School on Saturday, Aug. 25. During pool play held at the Vincennes Clark Middle School gymnasi- um, the Lady Chargers dropped two straight-set losses, falling 25 -12, 25 - 19 to Mount Carmel (Ill.) and 25 -17, 25 -12 to Mount Vernon (Posey). Then, playing in the bronze bracket of the sin- gle-elimination portion of the 12-team invitation- al, Pike Central defeat- ed South Knox 25 -14, 25 - 14 in the semifinals be- fore defeating Evansville Christian 25 -23, 25 -6 in the final. Following is a match-by- match summary: Mount Carmel (Ill.) 2, Pike Central 0 A fter battling to a 4- 4 tie early in the first set, Mount Carmel (Ill.) scored seven of the next 10 points to open up an 11- 7 lead. Pike Central pulled back to within 12-10 before the Lady Aces scored 10 straight points to extend their lead to 23-10 enroute to a 1-0 lead in the best-of- three match. In the second set, Mount Carmel (Ill.) scored nine of the first 10 points and held the Lady Chargers off to finish off the match. Seniors Becca Crow, Alyssa Jenkins and Taylor Lamey and junior Audrey Keepes had two kills each for Pike Central. Crow also led the Lady Chargers in ace serves with two and in set-assists with four, while junior Karsyn Pipes had a team-high 10 digs. Mount Vernon (Posey) 2, Pike Central 0 In the first set, after bat- tling to a 13-13 tie, Mount Vernon (Posey) scored seven of the next eight points to open up a 21- 14 lead. A fter Pike Cen- tral scored three straight points to close to within 21- 17, the Lady Wildcats went on a 4-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, Mount Vernon jumped out to a 3-0 lead. A fter the Lady Char- gers scored four of the next six points to close to within 5 -4, Mount Vernon scored four straight points to extend its lead to 9 -4. Then, leading 9 -5, the Lady Wildcats went on a 9 -0 run to stretch their ad- vantage to 18 -5. Pike Cen- tral would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the match. Crow led the Lady Char- gers in kills with five while Jenkins – who had two blocks – and senior Kylie Dawson added two each. Pipes had a team-high four service points, including two on ace serves, while sophomore Addie John- son had 14 digs. Pike Central 2, South Knox 0 In the first set, Pike Central scored eight of the first nine points to take an 8 -1 lead. South Knox would pull to within four points twice – at 13-9 and 15 -11 – before the La- dy Chargers went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 22-11 while cruising to a 1- 0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, with the score tied at 3-3, Pike Central scored 10 of the next 11 points – including five off serves by Crow and three off serves by junior Aubrie Dawson – to open up a 13-4 lead. The La- dy Spartans would get no closer than eight points the rest of the match. Shoultz led the La- dy Chargers in kills with three while Crow, Aubrie Dawson, Keepes and soph- omore Kenzie Powell had two each. Crow, Aubrie Dawson, Johnson and Taylor Lamey had two ace serves apiece while Jen- kins registered two blocks. Pike Central 2, Evansville Christian 0 Pike Central, trailing 23- 21 in the first set, scored four straight points – in- cluding three off serves by Kylie Dawson – to take a 1- 0 lead in the best-of-three match. In the second set, the A goal by Washington Catholic junior Elena Es- ser snapped a 1-1 tie with 16:49 left in the second half as the Lady Cardinals held off host Pike Central for a 2- 1 victory on in girls' soccer action on Tuesday, Aug. 21. A fter the two teams bat- tled to a 0 -0 tie in the first half, the Lady Chargers took a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Kelsey Barrett with 24:48 remaining. The 1-0 lead proved short-lived, however, as Lady Cardinals sophomore Claire Fox – after Pike Cen- tral was called for a push- ing foul just outside the 18 -yard box – fired the en- suing free kick out of Pike Central junior goalie Jen- Junior Ethan Scott and sophomore Connor Young scored two goals each to lead the Pike Central High School boys' soccer team to a 6 -0 victory over visit- ing Washington Catholic on Tuesday, Aug. 21. Young's first goal – off an assist by Scott – gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead with 37:16 left in the first half. His second goal – off an as- sist by sophomore Hunter Capehart – extended Pike Central's lead to 2-0 with 34:50 remaining. Goals by senior Hayden Kabrick – off an assist by Scott – senior Christian Benson – on a header on a corner kick by Kabrick – and Scott – off an assist by Benson – gave the Chargers a 5 -0 halftime lead. Scott added his second goal of the game with 9:37 left in the second half, on a free kick from in front of the goal. "Before the game, we talk- ed about having a good first half, and the boys really re- sponded," Pike Central head coach Jacob Western said. "We controlled the posses- sion for most of the game and did a good job creating chances." "We always try to empha- size scoring on a set piece, and being able to score off of a free kick, throw in and corner kick in a game is real- ly exciting," Western added. Young, Western noted, provided the Chargers with an early spark, while junior Gabe Caldwell did a great job winning balls out of the middle. Junior goalie Noah Whann had two second-half saves. A fter falling behind 23-0 in a 34- 22 loss to Indianapolis Lighthouse East in their season opener on Satur- day, Aug. 18, the Chargers again dug themselves a hole that they could not climb out of as Tecumseh scored on its first three possessions to open up a 21-0 lead. "I think the deal on our start was that it just came down to a lack of exe- cution, a lack of doing the things that we had talked about doing," first-year Pike Central head coach Dave Ste- phens said. "I think it's like every- body's over anxious to be the guy to make the play, and sometimes when you're drowning, the more you strug- gle, the more likely you are to drown," "I think sometimes we get in that mentality where one guy thinks, 'Hey, they're starting to put a drive togeth- er,' and now they're wanting to try to do something above and beyond what they're supposed to do," Stephens add- ed. "We've just got to figure out a way for those guys to trust and execute the game plan. It's hard, because they've been doing things a certain way for such a long time. But they'll be fine if we can do that." Starting at its own 30 -yard line af- ter receiving the game-opening kick- off, Pike Central turned the ball over on a fumble that was recovered by the Braves at the Chargers' 29 -yard line with 10 :44 left in the first quarter. Following a five-yard false start pen- alty against Tecumseh on first down, senior wide receiver Blake Miles snapped off a 33-yard run to give the Braves a first down at Pike Central's 1-yard line.
