Elli Brieden- baugh was recently named the Fledgling of the Year award winner by the Indiana Audubon Society's Young Birders Conference in Car- mel. Briedenbaugh is the daughter of Matt and Nikki Breidenbaugh, and is an av- id birder. "Fledgling of the Year is an award reserved for chil- dren who show an enthusi- asm for birding and dedica- tion to the conservation of wild birds," stated a release from the Audubon Society. It continued, "Elli has shown a growing enthusi- asm for birds and bird con- servation, and displayed te- nacity for locating and log- ging species seen." So far she has 87 species on her life list, which is a list of the birds she can confirm to have observed in the wild. The Audubon Society cited her fascination with birds and her participation in the 2018 May Big Day Event, as well as taking trips to Goose Pond near Linton to see a Snowy Owl, and also traveling to the Jasper Pulas- ki Wildlife Area to see the Sandhill Crane migration. Elli said her favorite bird is the keel-billed toucan, which she saw at the zoo, but hopes someday to see in the wild. "I'm kind of a bird watch- er. She just kind of latched onto it. She loves birds," said Nikki of her daughter Elli. Nikki said she started watching birds a couple of years ago. "It is something we really enjoy doing togeth- er." "We watch in the back yard all the time. Anytime we go somewhere, we watch out the windows for birds. We go to different lakes and such to look for birds. It is al- most like a lifestyle. We are always looking for them," said Nikki. She said she started bird watching when she was a teenager. "Kind of the same way. I just fell in love with birds. We would go out in the backyard at night and watch for owls. I started get- ting birding magazines and there was no looking back." Elli said she was excited at the awards program and she knew she was going to win before they announced her name. "Because they said the person had 87 birds in their list and I have 87 on my list, so I knew I was go- ing to win." She said she likes to go to Snakey Point and the Mus- catatuck Wildlife Refuge to watch for birds. "I kind of like painting… in the summer I catch fire- flies," said Elli. She add- ed she puts them in a jar at night. "The next morning, we open the lid and let them fly away, and the fireflies are happy." Nikki said she and Elli are working on seeing a Whoop- ing Crane, which migrates through the area twice a year. "We are always on the lookout for them because they are so rare." They are also looking for various war- blers, which she said are of- ten hard to see because they are under leaf cover. "You have to listen for them and then just wait for them to move from the leaf cover," said Nikki. "The good thing is you can add new birds to your life list and mom says we will have a party when I get to 100," said Elli. Otwell girl named Fledging of the Year by the Indiana Audubon Society Elli Breidenbaugh pets a Carolina wren's head that she rescued after it had been caught in a box on their porch. She released it into their yard. Elli Breidenbaugh, 7, proudly displays her award from the Indiana Audubon Society. She was named the Fledgling of the Year by the Indiana Society's Young Birders Conference.
