C-10 Wednesday, August 29, 2018 The Press-Dispatch EAST GIBSON NEWS Submit school news: Email: egnews@ pressdispatch.net Deadline: Noon on Friday Meredith Reyna makes learning Spanish fun at Wood Memorial By Kenzie Rudolph Meredith Reyna, or Profe Rey- na as she likes to be called, has successfully made it through her first couple weeks as the new Spanish teacher at Wood Memo- rial High School. Reyna is not just new to this school, but new to In- diana as well. She moved to Holland from Southeast Missouri for a new chapter. Her boyfriend lives here, and after a significant amount of long distance, she made the move. She describes Holland as "the cutest little town." In college, Reyna had many op- portunities to travel and expand her knowledge of foreign languag- es. She spent a semester in Ma- drid, Spain, a semester in Brus- sels, Belgium, and she also did an internship in Washington, D.C., with Eurovision, a news organi- zation. She has traveled all over the world. "I love culture shock. Not speaking the language or know- ing anyone is not a deterrent. It makes it more exciting," said Rey- na. When it came to obtaining the job as the Spanish teacher at Wood Memorial, she said that she saw the posting online, inter- viewed and was hired right away. When it comes to her time teaching here thus far, she said "I have really enjoyed getting to know my upperclassmen." She explained that she is used to teaching middle school kids, and she has enjoyed getting to relate to young adults on a differ- ent level. When it comes to her teaching style, she is not afraid to be dif- ferent. "I am not afraid to embarrass myself. I put it all out there," she added. Reyna wants students to want to come to her class instead of just showing up because they have to. She sings, raps and dances as well to entertain students. "When they groan or laugh, it's a hook," said Reyna with a smile. See TOUGH on 11 Oakland City Elementary Above: First grader Myles Madison enjoying a friendly game of dodgeball during P.E. Wood Memorial High School Open House By Kenzie Rudolph Wood Memorial lost to Gibson Southern on Thursday, August 23, 0 -6 at The Fort. Wood Memorial's defense, led by goalkeeper Noah Casey, held off Gibson Southern the majority of the first half, only allowing one goal to enter their premesis. Gibson Southern fired off 30 shots in the first half alone, keep- ing Casey on his toes. The second half was a different story, and the Titans netted five more goals. They kept the ball away from Wood Memorial, not allowing them to posess the ball or threaten their defense. Head Caoch Josh Stolz knew why the Trojans could not keep the ball. At half time he said to his team,"Our touches are killing us." Wood Memorial knew that Gibson Southern would be a tough competitor.
