By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central Middle School eighth grade football team opened its season with a 25 -16 loss at Washington on Thursday, Aug. 23. Offensively, the Chargers were able to muster just 22 yards – 10 rushing and 12 passing – and one first down during the first half while Washington jumped out to a 13-0 lead. "We started the game very flat," Pike Central head coach Jeremy Howald said. "The team was not prepared to start this game mentally. I think we were looking past this team, remembering the results from playing them in seventh grade." Washington, which lost 12- 0 to the Chargers in last sea- son's seventh grade contest, wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as fullback Keegan McDannald scram- bled 64 yards and into the end zone on the game's sec- ond play from scrimmage. Sydney Melton's point-af- ter kick was good, giving the Hatchets a 7-0 lead with seven minutes left in the first quar- ter. Pike Central started its first offensive series at its own 41-yard line but, after gaining just one yard on three plays, was forced to punt. Washing- ton's Zach Mann fielded Jagar Dent's 31-yard kick at the Hatchets' 27-yard line and re- turned it to midfield. Following a nine-yard run by quarterback Tanner Blevins, Washington almost turned the ball over on a fum- bled snap that was recovered by Hatchets running back Derrick Kolusch at the Char- gers' 42-yard line. A fter a six-yard gain by Kolusch gave Washington a fresh set of downs at Pike Central's 36 -yard line, the Hatchets' were flagged for three straight penalties – one for holding and two for false starts – that backed them up to their own 46 -yard line. Facing 2nd-and-30, how- ever, McDannald ran for a 24-yard gain to the Chargers' 30 -yard line. On the next play, Kolusch scrambled for a 19 -yard gain to the Pike Cen- tral's 11-yard line. Two plays later, Blevins scored on a seven-yard run as the first quarter expired, extending Washington's lead to 13-0. Pike Central's offense re- turned to the field for just the second time of the game at the beginning of the second quar- ter, starting at its own 30 -yard line. Four plays later, howev- er, the Chargers would turn the ball over on downs when a pass by quarterback Kend- ric Sorgius intended for Bra- den Howald fell incomplete on 4th-and-4 at their own 36 -yard line. Following a second-down holding penalty, a five-yard run by McDannald and an incomplete pass by Blevins left the Hatchets facing 4th- and-12 at Pike Central's 38 -yard line. Kolusch then ran for an 18 -yard gain, giving Washing- ton a first down at the Char- gers' 20 -yard line. Three plays later, howev- er, a pass by Blevins intend- ed for Mann was picked off by Pike Central seventh grader Julian Gish at the Chargers' 1-yard line with 3:24 left in the first half. A fter gaining just two yards on the next three plays, Dent – forced to punt from his own 3-yard line – got off a 25 -yard kick that was fielded by Mann and returned three yards to the 25 -yard line. Washington was unable to capitalize, however, as a pass by Blevins was picked off by seventh grader Quade Mor- ton and returned to the Char- gers' 20 -yard line. A 12-yard pass by Sorgius to Peyton Howald garnered Pike Central's only first down of the first half with 9.7 sec- onds left. A fter spiking the ball to stop the clock with 2.4 seconds remaining, a pass by Sorgius was intercepted by Mann as the first half expired. Pike Central began the sec- ond half with a bang when Sorgius – on 1st-and-10 from his own 45 -yard line – hooked up with Peyton Howald on a 25 -yard pass that set the Char- gers up with a first down at Washington's 30 -yard line. Following a three-yard run by Sorgius and a two- yard run by Dent, an offsides penalty against the Hatch- ets gave Pike Central a fresh set of downs at Washington's 20 -yard line. Four plays later, on 4th- and-2 at the 12-yard line, Dent ran for a seven-yard gain, giv- ing the Chargers a first down at the Hatchets' 5 -yard line. Dent then barreled the re- maining five yards into the end zone, and seventh grad- er Ricky Culbertson ran for the two-point conversion, to cut Washington's lead to 13-8 with 4:52 left in the third pe- riod. The Hatchets answered, however, on the very next play from scrimmage, when Kolusch broke through the line and raced 65 yards into the end zone. Melton's point-after kick was blocked, but Washing- ton now held a 19 -8 lead with 4:26 remaining in the third quarter. The Chargers were not ready to quit, giving them- selves excellent field position when Dent returned the en- suing kickoff 50 yards to the Hatchets' 26 -yard line. Five plays later, facing 4th- and-9 at Washington's 14-yard line, Sorgius connected with Braden Howald for an 11-yard pass to the 3-yard line. On the next play, Sorgius tossed a shovel pass to Gish, who turned upfield and dart- ed into the end zone. Dent's two-point conver- sion run was good, pulling PCMS eighth grade football team drops 25-16 loss to Washington Pike Central Middle School eighth graders Bra- den Howald (32) and Isaac Marchino (90) force Washington eighth grader Derrick Kolusch (5) to fumble the ball during middle school football ac- tion on Thursday, Aug. 23.
