Weston Stamps scored to give Tecumseh – following the point-after kick by junior Dylan Simmons – a 7-0 lead with 10 :07 left in the open- ing period. Pike Central, aided by a personal foul penalty against the Braves on the ensuing kickoff, began its second of- fensive drive at Tecumseh's 46 -yard line. However, an incomplete pass by junior quarterback Mario Fields intended for ju- nior wide receiver Connor O'Neal on first down, and a five-yard loss by senior run- ning back Eli Coleman on second down left the Char- gers facing 3rd-and-15 from their own 49 -yard line. Following a run for no gain by Fields, a punt by se- nior Braxton Rice bounced out of bounds at the Braves' 29 -yard line. Six plays later, a 28 -yard touchdown run by sopho- more running back Travis Parker extended Tecum- seh's lead to 13-0 with 5:50 left in the first period. Then, after forcing Pike Central to punt from its own 31-yard line, the Braves put together a 11-play, 73-yard drive that culminated in a 12-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Griffin Tuley. Miles subsequently ran for the two-point con- version, stretching Tecum- seh's lead to 21-0 with 11:17 remaining in the second pe- riod. Pike Central's offense got things going a little lat- er when, starting at its own 39 -yard line, it put together an eight-play, 61-yard drive, capped by a four-yard touch- down run by Fields, cutting the Braves' lead to 21-6 with 7:05 left in the first half. Highlighting the scoring drive were a 17-yard pass from Fields to O'Neal on 1st-and-10 at the Chargers' 39 -yard line and a 21-yard pass from senior wide re- ceiver Judah Leathco to ju- nior tight end Levi McCar- ter on 3rd-and-4 at Tecum- seh's 38 -yard line. The Braves, however, an- swered with a scoring drive of their own, piecing togeth- er an eight-play, 80 -yard drive capped by a nine-yard touchdown pass from Tuley to senior tight end Conner Perry. Simmons' point-after kick was good, giving the Braves a 28 -6 lead with 3:14 left in the first half. Neither team was able to score in the second half. In fact, the Chargers held Te- cumseh to just 56 yards of total offense in the final two periods – 49 yards on the ground, 7 yards in the air – after the Braves racked up 265 yards – 251 yards on the ground, 14 yards in the air – during the first half. "We really didn't make any adjustments," Stephens said. "(Defensive coordi- nator Caleb) Cherry had a great game plan going in- to the game. There wasn't anything that we saw that we weren't 100 percent pre- pared for. The difference was that our guys started do- ing the things that we had asked them to do last Tues- day." "There was no magic," Stephens added. "They didn't do something differ- ent. It was just, flat out, we didn't execute. When we executed, we did fine. And when we didn't execute, then we did poorly." Pike Central didn't fare any better offensively, com- piling just 52 yards of total offense in the second half – 46 yards on the ground, 6 yards in the air – after being held to 69 yards – 26 yards on the ground, 43 yards in the air - during the first half. "Offensively, I felt like I was comfortable in what we showed them, what we were doing," Stephens said. "Of- fensive coordinator ( J.J.) Howald had a good game plan. The biggest thing that I noticed was just, when we get those big physical guys inside, we have a hard time executing." "I can deal with physi- cal mismatches," Stephens added. "But the thing that is frustrating is the lack of mental execution." Repetition, Stephens said, will only help get the play- ers to trust and execute the game plan. "I don't think any of our kids are willfully just say- ing, 'Hey, I'm not going to do this,'" Stephens said. "It's just a matter of it takes time, it takes repetition. You know, if you've been using to doing something your whole life a certain way – 'Hey, go get the ball; hey, go do this; run around and make a play' – that's different than what we're asking them to do." "We're asking them, 'Hey, do your job in the structure of the defense do your job in the structure of the offense. And trust the game plan,'" Stephens added. "It's just a learning curve." Parker led Tecumseh with 194 yards and one touch- down on 21 carries while Stamps rushed for 66 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries. Tuley completed two of 10 pass attempts for 14 yards while Simmons completed his only pass at- tempt for seven yards. Coleman led Pike Cen- tral with 57 yards rushing on 15 carries, while Fields added 15 yards – and one touchdown – on 10 carries. Fields also completed four of 15 pass attempts for 28 yards. Leathco was 1-for-1 passing for 21 yards. O'Ne- al had three receptions for 26 yards. Pike Central will return to action on Friday, Aug. 31, when the Chargers will host Heritage Hills in the first of seven straight con- tests against Pocket Athlet- ic Conference foes. The Patriots enter the game 2-0 following a 45 -7 victory over Mount Vernon (Posey) on Friday, Aug. 17, and a 49 -0 victory over Tell City on Friday, Aug. 24. Heritage Hills has won 33 straight games against the Chargers, whose last victory over the Patriots was a 21-14 win in 1986. "Heritage Hills is Heri- tage Hills," Stephens said. "They're going to be good. They're going to be big. They're going to be well-dis- ciplined. They're going to be well-coached." "Coach Cherry's got a fan- tastic defensive game plan this week," Stephens add- ed. "I really think that he's got a good scheme to real- ly kind of, hopefully, force them into doing things that they don't want to do. So I'm excited about that. We're go- ing to try to limit the things that they like to do best." Kickoff is set for 8 p.m., Eastern time.
