BACKGROUND Land that is enrolled in the US Department of Agriculture's Conservation Reserve Pro- gram (CRP) is land that is taken out of produc- tion crops by the landowners over the course of 10 -year contracts. The USDA requires the land be mowed or burned to maintain it as open grass- land for wildlife habitat. The landowner gets to decide which practice to use. One of the bene- fits of burning is that it suppresses woody vege- tation and non-native plants. To learn more about the CRP program and other cost share programs to improve natural resources, please contact the Pike County USDA Service Center at 812-354- 6120.
