FIFTY YEARS AGO The Pike County Dispatch Thursday, April 7, 1966 SCIENCE FAIR AT WINSLOW HIGH SCHOOL Silva Pruitt was award the Grand Champion tro- phy over all groups for her conchology project at the Science Fair at Win- slow High School Cafete- ria Friday evening. Pruitt, a junior in Winslow High School, displayed hun- dreds of various conch shells. She has been two years looking up the names of the conch shells and mounting them, each one labeled. Her aunt, Mrs. Marjorie Tucker, of Pompano Beach, Fla. has been a great help in accu- mulating her large collec- tion. Tucker is formerly of Petersburg. Karen Curtis, of Win- slow, won first in the high school division at the Sci- ence Fair with her bread project. Clifford McCrary won first in the junior division with an Indian Arrowhead collection. Those hon- ored were BTNS Robert Bement, Army E-4 Rod- ney Loveless, Sgt. Paul Head and Marine Corp. Marty Hembree. They rode on a fire truck down Main Street to the Ameri- can Legion Little League Park. There will be a com- munity wide celebration for Pike County soldiers and their families in Otwell with a small parade, open house and carry-in sup- per at Otwell Community Center at 6 p.m. Wednes- day April 10. Marshall Saxton of Win- slow, brought Charles Lu- cas here Monday and turned him over to Sheriff Bass. Lucas was fined $415 by Squire Chambers on a charge of intoxication. Mrs. Dode Schote died at her home in Danville, Kentucky, and was buried at Washington Tuesday. She was well known here having visited the Lingo family on several occa- sions. Drilling on the gas well near the fair grounds com- menced last Saturday eve- ning. The well is down about 100 feet at this time. Work has been greatly re- tarded owing to the condi- tion of the weather. Rural Mail route carri- ers will receive an increase of $100 per year, which will make their salary $ 600. Marshall Willis and Miss Bell Blaize were mar- ried at the residence of Rev. A. J. Willis last Thurs- day night. The bride is the daughter of George L. Blaize of Logan township, and the groom is the son of Rev. A. J. Willis of Mad- ison township. The Dem- ocrat extends congratula- tions. Aaron Martin, aged 35 years, living near Littles, died last Saturday morn- ing of pneumonia after a few days' illness. The fu- neral services were con- ducted at the family res- idence Monday by Revs. Josephus Lee of Oakland City, and J. M. Burch of Ar- thur. Burial at the Martin cemetery. The paper sock, the in- vention of which was her- alded some time ago, has now become a mercan- tile commodity and can be bought for ten cents a pair. It comes in a va- riety of shades and pat- terns to suit the most fas- tidious and is hygienic in that it is a sure preventa- tive of cold feet. It is not laundered. When you get through with one pair you toss it into the waste bas- ket and get another from your sock book. J. E. Schurz, the fur deal- er, made one of the biggest shipments of furs last Sat- urday ever made in the state. He shipped 13,000 skins to Detroit, Michi- gan. He left on the evening train for that city and may probably go to New York before he returns home. The shipment consisted of mink, possum, coon, muskrat, skunk, tame and wild cat hides. He is one of the most extensive buyers in the state and buys furs in Arkansas, Missouri, Il- linois, Kentucky and oth- er states. He will make an- other shipment shortly of nearly the same amount. Alex Chappell, city mar- shal, received notice last Friday that he has been ap- pointed a guard in the fed- eral penitentiary at Atlan- ta, Georgia. He left Tues- day for that place to see how he likes the position and if it meets his expec- tations he will resign as marshal. The county clerk has issued marriage licenses to the following persons since our last report: Floyd Welch and Geneva Deck- er; Thomas M. Bush and Mary E. Laughlin; Samu- el W. Oliver Harris of Otwell, who went south a few months ago for the ben- efit of his health, died at Boerne, Texas, last Thurs- day. He had been sick for nearly a year past. He was a son of Nick Harris of Ot- well and a highly respect- ed young business man of that place, being the ju- nior member of the firm Scraper & Harris, furni- ture dealers and under- takers. He was about 21 years old. The remains were brought home for burial and arrived Wednes- day. The funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon and interment at the cemetery near Otwell. The Democrat extends its sympathy to the parents and relatives. Cal Thompson, aged 39 years, a coal miner by oc- cupation, died at his home at Littles Tuesday of con- sumption. The funeral was held Wednesday at the Lit- tles church being conduct- ed by Rev. A. J. Hedge and interment at the Martin cemetery. 03/07/1902 - A little girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schwear recently. John Egbert who has been in Arkansas for the past year is back. Velpen Items - Dr. R. W. Harris has a fine girl baby at his happy house. Alfred Survant and wife visited their son Tilden and fam- ily the last of the week at Francisco. Dr. D. E. Tay- lor and family left the last of the week for Louisville where Mr. Taylor will at- tend medical college. Mrs. F. M. Payne's boarding house is greatly improved by a nice street light and every one in town would do well to put up a street light. Algiers items - G. L. McCormack and Elwood Brock were initiated into the Modern Woodmen last Saturday night. David A. Jones and Catherine Mey- ers were married last Sun- day evening at the home of the bride's mother. They will leave in a few days for St. Louis to make that place their future home. Bettie Lomax died last Saturday of cancer of the breast. She has lived near Cato for a number of years and was a highly respected lady. She leaves a husband to mourn his loss. She was about 53 years old. She was laid to rest in the Mcclure cemetery Monday. The infant child of Frank Lee of Clay township, died Sunday last and was buried Monday. Rev. Albert Shields of Decker and Miss Dora Rhoades of Algiers were married Sunday night. The marriage took place at the M.E. Church and Rev. Sims performed the ceremony. The Winslow Coal and Coke company have con- tracted with Thompson & Co. of Oakland City for the erection of twenty houses and a store room at their mines about two miles south of Winslow.
