Pike Central will host North Posey on Thursday, May 5, at 6:30 p.m., then will compete in the Pocket Athletic Conference Cham- pionships at Tell City on Tuesday, May 10. we only got one run," Weis- man lamented afterward. "There's where you've just got to pound them. There's where you've got to put them away." In the bottom of the fourth inning, however, the Lady Chargers sent nine batters to the plate – four of whom scored – as Pike Central ex- tended its lead to 8 -0. Following back-to-back first-pitch hits by sopho- more designated player Jalah Barnes and Scott to start the inning, Pipes sin- gled to right field, scor- ing Barnes while Scott ad- vanced to third and Pipes took second. An infield single by Brooks scored Scott while Pipes advanced to third base. A fter Brooks stole second base, Croak hit a grounder at Boger, who threw the ball home and Pinkstaff tagged Pipes for the first out of the inning as Brooks advanced to third. Brooks then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Halbrader to give Pike Cen- tral a 7-0 lead. Croak advanced to second on a single by Abbott, then scored on a single by Stone, extending the Lady Char- gers' lead to 8 -0. "We talked about being ready on the first pitch, and some of them took advan- tage of that right there, and it paid off for them," Weis- man said. "I like that ap- proach. Pitchers go up there and they try to get ahead the first pitch, so, hey, be ready to go. Sometimes you're go- ing to win that battle, some- times you're not." In the top of the fifth in- ning, Vincennes Lincoln got on the scoreboard when senior designated player Kelsey Quinett and junior third baseman Kacy Cram- er led off with back-to-back singles and, one out later, scored on a home run to straight away center field by Montgomery. Montgomery also belted a second homer – a solo shot to left field – with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to conclude the scoring. "She's a good player and a good hitter," Weisman said of Montgomery. "We've just got to be smart with her, keep it away from her, if nothing else. In an important game, we'd probably just put her on, especially with runners on. I mean, she had all four of their RBIs, and she scored two of the runs herself! " Halbrader went the dis- tance for Pike Central, al- lowing four runs – all earned – on eight hits while walking two and striking out four. With the win, the Lady Chargers improved to 3- 0 against sectional oppo- nents, after previously post- ing wins over Princeton and Southridge. Pike Central will travel to Jasper – cur- rently ranked No. 1 in Class 3A – on Tuesday, May 17, while a game against Wash- ington on Wednesday, April 27, was rained out, is not ex- pected to be rescheduled. "That feels good," Weis- man said. "That feels re- al good. A win is a win, re- gardless of what the circum- stances are, who they had, who we had." Weisman said that, if the Lady Chargers were to square off again in the sec- tional tournament – which Pike Central is hosting this year – he would likely call on Sorgius to pitch. "We've got somebody else on our team that they haven't seen," Weisman said, refer- ring to Sorgius. "Most of those girls have seen Sam two or three years, so our intentions are they proba- bly won't see her again." "( Vincennes Lincoln head coach Chaz Hendrix) will have some things in his bag, we'll have some in ours, you know," Weisman added. Pike Central will host South Spencer on Wednes- day, May 4, at 6 p.m., before hosting the Pike Central Invitational – with Evans- ville Reitz, Mount Vernon (Posey) and Tell City also participating – on Saturday, May 7, starting at 11 a.m. • The game against Vin- cennes Lincoln was des- ignated as the Pike Cen- tral softball team's "Strike Out Cancer Game." Lady Alices senior catcher Tay- lor Pinkstaff, who was di- agnosed with ovarian can- cer at 16, was given the hon- or of throwing out the first pitch, with her parents, Ko- ri and Sonny Pinkstaff, join- ing her on the field. In addition to honoring Pinkstaff, each of the team's coaches and players dedi- cated the game to a fami- ly member who has fought cancer.
