Alexandra Walsh is dedicated to treating children who have cancer. While lots of people choose medicine as a career, she feels, treating kids with cancer or blood disorders is a calling. And callings are seldom easy. ���I enjoy working hard, and I get a lot of energy from my patients,��� she says. ���I think it���s really a privilege to do what we do. It just makes you want to do the best for them every day.��� On average, she and her colleagues see about eight patients in the hospital and another 10 to 12 in clinic daily, ���so it���s a busy day.��� Parenthood ��� Walsh has two kids at home, ages 6 and eight months, and is expecting her third ��� has brought with it the ability to add another dimension of care. ���I always try and do the best for my patients,��� she says simply. ���I always try and think what I would want to have done for my children, and try to do the same for each patient; put in the extra effort for each patient so they feel they���re getting the best possible care. I think I have a lot of empathy being a mother, and just seeing these patients going through what they���re going through really keeps me motivated to do the best that I can.��� In Walsh���s eyes, a good day���s work is its own reward. ���I always like to go to bed at night feeling like I did what I could.
