Chastain, the 18 -year-old daughter of Carrie Hurt, of Stendal, plans to study sports management – with an emphasis in adult fit- ness – at Greenville Col- lege, which is located 45 miles east of St. Louis, Mo. "It seemed like a real- ly good school, and they gave me a scholarship to go there," Chastain said. "They'd been sending me stuff to play soccer, but their roster got full. So then I chose to run track." The Greenville College women's track and field team recently won the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athlet- ic Conference (SLIAC) title, and placed sixth out of 21 teams at the National Chris- tian College Athletics Asso- ciation (NCCA A) Champi- onships in Sewanee, Okla. Chastain participated in track at Pike Central High School during her fresh- man, sophomore and senior years, and played soccer all four years. "She got her hands ex- tended, and just went with the pitch, because (Mangis) was pitching everybody out- side. And, I mean, it took off! " The Lady Chargers, how- ever, were not quite done, as junior catcher Lexi Halbrad- er and junior centerfielder Shelbi Pipes followed with back-to-back singles. Halbrader would score on a single by Scott – giv- ing Pike Central a 11-3 lead – as Pipes advanced to third base. A fter Scott stole second base, a wild pitch by fresh- man pitcher Camryn Stemle allowed Pipes to score while Scott advanced to third base. When the throw from ju- nior catcher Harlee Zehr got past Stemle, Scott raced home, extending the Lady Chargers' lead to 13-3. Pike Central would add two more runs in the fifth inning – on a run-scoring groundout by Scott and a one-run single by Brooks – to take a 15 -3 lead. Northeast Dubois scored one run – which was un- earned – in the fifth inning and had runners on second and third with two outs be- fore Sorgius got Mangin to ground out to end the game. A fter giving up four runs – two of which were earned – on four hits in the first in- ning, Sorgius held the La- dy Jeeps to one run – which was unearned – on four hits while striking out one over the final four innings. "I don't think I came pre- pared," said Sorgius, who threw 43 out of 58 pitches for strikes. "I just had to get focused and know that my defense was going to back me up." "We've got to get her kind of working the ball down in the strike zone," Weisman said. "If she keeps the ball at the knees and jump ahead on the count, then you can get some of these borderline pitches that are away or in- side. It's up to the discretion of the umpire whether he's going to call them or not. And, after you see where your strike zone is, that's where you stay with it. You just keep it right there on the knees." Sorgius went 3-for-3 for the Lady Chargers with a double and a home run, scored one run and drove in five, while Brooks, Halbrad- er and Stone had two sin- gles apiece. Brooks, Scott and Vaughn drove in two runs each. With the win, Pike Cen- tral ended the regular sea- son 15 -5 overall and – fol- lowing an 8 -3 win at Tell City on Wednesday, May 17 – 6 -2 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. The Lady Char- gers opened sectional play at Jasper on Monday, May 22, against the host Lady Wild- cats. "There's a few looking back we'd like to have back," Weisman said. "We've got a game coming up Monday that's going to mean a lot. From what I gather, from what I feel from the kids, they're ready for it. They're wanting to go with it." The game also marked the final regular-season home game for the Lady Chargers' two seniors – Madison Scott and Sydney Brooks. Scott, who has signed to play softball at Wabash Valley Community College in Mount Carmel, Ill., has 36 hits in 79 at-bats for a .456 batting average and is 11-for-11 in steal attempts while scoring a team-high 27 runs this season. Brooks, who has signed to play soccer at Oakland City University, has 20 hits in 67 at-bats for a .295 batting av- erage. "We've got some gaps we're going to have to fill at the top of the lineup next year, with those two out of here," Weisman said. In the junior varsity contest, freshman Alizé Padgett threw a three-hit- ter as Pike Central defeat- ed Northeast Dubois 13-0. Sophomore first baseman Hannah Carnahan collect- ed three doubles in as ma- ny at-bats, scored three runs and drove in three, while her twin sister, sophomore third baseman Emily Carnahan, scored two runs and drove in four while going 1-for-3 at the plate.
