Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Senior pitcher Olivia Knies hurled a one-hit shutout as Jasper defeated visiting Pike Central 3-0 in the opening round of the sectional tourna- ment on Monday, May 22. A fter Lady Charger senior shortstop Madison Scott reached base on an error to start the bot- tom of the first inning, Knies retired 15 straight batters – including eight on strikeouts – before an infield single by Pike Central junior catcher Lexi Halbrader leading off the sixth inning broke up her no-hitter. "The ball that was high and away, we were swinging at," said Lady Chargers head coach Rick Weisman, whose team ended the season with a 15 - 6 record. "They were balls, but we were swinging at them, so why not go ahead and continue throw- ing them there? But, at the same time, we've just got to be more disciplined." "Hopefully, we learn from this here, we'll get a little more grit in our game and try to play it a lit- tle bit better," Weisman added. Jasper took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. With one out, sophomore third baseman Ra- chel Gress reached base on a fly ball that landed just inches inside the third-base foul in shallow left field, advanced to second on a ground-out by senior right fielder Maria Gobert to Pike Central junior first baseman Demi Croak, then took third when Halbrader bobbled a pitch from junior pitch- er Peyton Sorgius with freshman designated play- er Grace Colvin at the plate. One week after winning pole vault during the Pocket Athletic Conference Champi- onships with a personal record leap of 12 feet, 6 inches, Tyler Kirby set another personal re- cord with a leap of 13 feet at the sectional meet, edging out Vincennes Lincoln junior No- ah Batty, who finished second with a leap of 12 feet, 6 inches. "It was great to see Tyler win pole vault," Pike Cen- tral head coach Chris Kram- er said. "To win PAC and sec- tional at any grade is good, but to do it as a freshman is some- thing else. He definitely de- serves it." Chargers junior Gavin Boyd, who placed first in pole vault at last year's sectional meet, will also be advancing to the regional meet – which is scheduled to be held on Thursday, May 25, at Evans- ville Central – after placing third in the event with a leap of 12 feet. "To have Gavin advance, too, is great," Kramer said. "We have been pretty for- tunate to have Coach Eric Knight on the coaching staff and coach up these guys and do as well as they have this By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Pike Central High School sopho- more Lillie Pancake placed third in pole vault during the girls' track and field sectional on Tuesday, May 16, at Princeton, to advance to the regional meet for the second year in a row. Pancake had a season-best leap of 8 feet, tying her personal record that she posted during last year's regional meet. "I am very proud and impressed with Lillie for making it to the regionals two years in a row as both a freshman and now as a sophomore," Lady Chargers head coach Ryne Biesterveld said of Pancake, who also finished 12th in the 400 -meter run with a time of 1:13.59. "I remember, at the start of her fresh- man year, she was not sure about do- ing pole vault. She vaulted some as an eighth grader for me when I was coach- ing middle school. I can say now, with- out doubt, that it is her favorite event." "We are hoping she will get to the nine-foot mark this year," Biester- See ADVANCE on 3 See SECTIONAL on 3 Pre-Owned Vehicles 1.
