B-2 Sports Wednesday, May 24, 2017 The Press-Dispatch An elated Pike Central High School junior pitcher Peyton Sorgius returns to the dugout holding the ball she hit for a three-run homer during a 15-4 win over visiting Northeast Dubois on Thursday, May 18. Ed Cahill photo Colvin subsequently laid down a squeeze bunt that Halbrader was unable to gr- ab, allowing Colvin to reach first base while Gress raced home with the game's first run. "If we would have let that ball go, it might have went foul," Wiseman said. "But, you're in the heat of battle right there and you either grab it or you don't grab it. You've got to react to it and be done with it." A fter Colvin was thrown out attempting to steal sec- ond base to end the inning, Sorgius retired the next sev- en batters until Gobert sin- gled with one out in the fifth inning. Colvin attempted to bunt her way onto base but was called out when the ball struck her in fair territory, and Gobert was ordered to return to first base, where she was left stranded when the next batter – freshman Lexie Jerger – grounded out to Scott. Then, with one out in the fifth inning, junior sec- ond baseman Grace Werner beat out a bunt single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball to right field by Knies, and scored on a bunt by Lindsay Mehringer to give the Lady Wildcats a 2- 0 lead. Jasper would tack on an- other run in the seventh in- ning, when Gobert belted a double with two outs, then scored on a single by Colvin. For the game, the Lady Wildcats scored three runs – two of which were earned – on six hits while leaving three runners on base. "We played well," Weis- man said. "You've got to give them credit, though. They're a good ball club. So when you get beat by the best, hey, you've got to take your hat off to them." With the win, Jasper ad- vanced to the semifinals, where the Lady Wildcats will square off against Vin- cennes Lincoln – a 2-1 win- ner over Princeton in Mon- day night's other first-round game – at 6 p.m. on Wednes- day, May 24. Sorgius drives in five runs in 15-4 win over Northeast Dubois By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net Before the 2017 season be- gan, Pike Central High School head softball coach Rick Weis- man told junior pitcher Peyton Sorgius that he would replace her with a courtesy runner whenever she reached base. "We've got a lot relying on her," Weisman explained. "We don't want to get a leg hurt or something." However, when the Lady Chargers hosted Northeast Dubois on Thursday, May 18, Sorgius finally got the chance to run the bases for herself. With Pike Central leading 7-3 with two outs in the sec- ond inning, Sorgius ham- mered the first pitch from La- dy Jeeps sophomore pitcher Clare Mangin for a three-run home run that landed half- way up the metal bleachers beyond the rightfield fence. "It felt really good, but I didn't think it was going over," Sorgius said following the La- dy Chargers' 15 -4 five-inning victory. "I thought it hit the bottom of the fence – and I just really wanted to run the bases." "It felt really good," Sorgi- us added. "I miss it. I miss do- ing it." The game got off to a rough start, however, as Northeast Dubois took a 3-0 first-inning lead on a run-scoring single by freshman third baseman Camryn Stemle and a two- run double by Mangin. A fter senior shortstop Mad- ison Scott and senior left field- er Sydney Brooks grounded out to start the home half of the first inning, junior sec- ond baseman Audra Stone singled to left, advanced to second on an infield hit by Pike Central junior first base- man Demi Croak, then took third when the throw by Lady Jeeps freshman second base- man Lizzie Kunz got past first baseman Macy Brinkman. Lady Chargers junior third baseman Jalah Barnes followed with a grounder at Kunz, but Brinkman was un- able to catch the throw at first base, allowing Stone to score while Croak advanced to sec- ond base. Freshman right fielder Lau- ren Vaughn followed with a single to centerfield, driving in Croak to cut Northeast Du- bois' lead to 3-2. A double by Sorgius would score both Barnes and Vaughn, propelling Pike Cen- tral ahead 4-3. In the second inning, the Lady Chargers would send 13 batters to the plate – nine of which scored – to open up a 13-3 lead. With one out, Scott reached on an error, advanced to sec- ond on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Brooks, extending Pike Central's lead to 5 -3. A fter Stone singled to left and Croak drew a walk to load the bases, Barnes deliv- ered a run-scoring single, up- ping the Lady Chargers' lead to 6 -3. A sacrifice fly by freshman rightfielder Lauren Vaughn plated Stone extended Pike Central's lead to 7-3, setting the stage for Sorgius' three- run blast. "That looked good," Weis- man said of Sorgius' home See SORGIUS on 5
