The Press-Dispatch Sports Wednesday, May 24, 2017 B- 3 year." "I was very proud of the way Gavin and Tyler jumped at sectionals," Knight said. "Gavin, Tyler and ( junior) Baron Earley have worked very hard this year at pole vault. At the end of each prac- tice, those three are always the last to leave." "It really helps having a couple of kids each year that are good at this event," Knight added. "They keep pushing each other and keep each oth- er jumping higher." Knight noted that Tyler Kirby spent much of the 2017 regular season behind Boyd and Earley, who placed sev- enth in pole vault during the sectional meet as a freshman with a leap of 9 feet, 10 inches and placed third in the event during the sectional meet as a sophomore with a leap of 11 feet. "Tyler has improved each meet and each practice," Knight said. "Tyler came in this year jumping under the two juniors at 8 -6. He worked very hard and has moved up in pole lengths and weights to improve that height each time." "Tyler is a very good ath- lete and also a good kid," Knight added. "He is one of those kids that will try or do anything you ask him to do, and will try his hardest to be the best at what he is doing. He's another one of those kids a coach really enjoys having on a team." Because each school is lim- ited to no more than two ath- letes per individual event at the sectional meet, Earley was the odd man out, Knight noted. "Baron has worked hard and has given us every- thing all year and is jumping heights right there with the other two," Knight said. "All three will be back next year." "The Evansville (Central) regional is a very big and com- petitive meet, and also very fun to compete in," Knight added. "Let's hope Mother Nature is kind to us and both Gavin and Tyler can push each other to more personal best heights." Boyd and Tyler Kirby also teamed up with senior Jared McCord and freshman Sam Theising to advance to the regional meet in the 400 -me- ter relay with a third-place fin- ish in the event with a time of 46.49 seconds. In addition, McCord ad- vanced to the regional meet in three individual events af- ter finishing second in the 300 -meter hurdles with a time of 42.40 seconds, finish- ing third in the 110 -meter hur- dles with a time of 16.25 sec- onds and finishing third in high jump with a leap of 6 feet. "For Jared to advance in all four events is amazing," Kramer said. "We knew going into sectionals that he had a great opportunity to advance in all four, and he performed well." "He has made it to regionals all four years in the 300 -meter hurdles and three out of four years in the 110 -meter hur- dles," Kramer added. "You definitely don't have someone like that come around very often, and it's a testament to him and his hard work and de- sire to go year after year." Also placing for the Char- gers, but not advancing to the regional meet, were: • Boyd, who placed fourth in the 100 -meter dash with a time of 12.00 seconds. • Theising, who placed sixth in the 300 -meter hur- dles with a personal record time of 45.40 seconds, best- ing his previous PR time of 45.68 seconds. • Sophomore Adam Kir- by, who placed seventh in the 400 -meter dash with a time of 55.91 seconds. • Sophomore Andrew Krieg, who placed sixth in discus with a personal record throw of 114 feet, 10 inches, besting his previous PR throw of 114 feet, 4 inches. • Freshman Nate Wool- ery, who placed seventh in the 3,200 -meter run with a per- sonal record time of 10 :47.12, besting his previous PR time of 11:10.60. • The team of Theising, Woolery, sophomore Chris- tian Benson and freshman A.J. Hill, who placed eighth in the 3,200 -meter relay with a time of 9:43.89.
