Not Just Oil, Pennzoil FAST FAST FAST FAST WAY WAY WAY WAY LET US DO YOUR DIRTY WORK! KIDS' CORNER BROUGHT TO YOU BY: The Symphony of Rutherford County is honored to premiere a composition written by Caleb Etchison in celebration of the Symphony's 35th anniversary concert at 3pm on April 30 at the Foundation Performing Arts Center. Etchison's piece, entitled "Gate Way to the Mountains," will be the grand fi nale to a varied program. Etchison describes his composition as being "inspired by the landscape of Rutherford County—its mountains, its rivers, its heritage." He says he took musical inspiration from Aaron Coplan's "Hoe Down" from Rodeo, and Smetana's Vltava (or "The Moldau"), as well as old time Appalachian tunes. From a personal perspective, he comments: "I think this piece features some of my best orchestration to date. It is an easy-going composition that is fun to listen to. I hope the audience will be able to relax and enjoy the piece. It's become one of my favorites, and I can't wait to hear it performed." The son of Mark and Amy Etchison, Caleb grew up in Gaston County. Both of his parents are musicians, so music was always a part of his life. It was no surprise that he would choose music for his career. He was homeschooled throughout his pre-college years. His mother introduced him to the piano in elementary school. From this early experience, he learned about the "circle of fi fths" and gained an obsession with harmony. He later studied classical piano with Chad Pollard. In high school, he played keys and organ at his church, sang in a community choir in Stanley and played percussion with the Gaston Symphonic Band for three years. Soon to be a graduate from Gardner-Webb University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music: Emphasis in Music Composition, Etchison gives much credit to his GWU professors for exposing him to many composers who have greatly infl uenced his compositional style. Among these are Dr. Matt Whitfi eld, composition professor, and Dr. Bruce Moser, piano. At the request of orchestra conductor, Dr. Patricia Sparti, he has written two selections for the Gardener-Webb orchestra, "The Psalm of Taios," and "Seafoam Elegy." In the spring of 2022, he won fi rst place in the National Alpha Chi competition. When asked why he chose composition rather than performance as the focus for his education and future career, he stated: "Composition is something I can spend many hours a day pouring myself into, and I just don't feel the same about performance." Etchison's future plans include pursuing a Masters in Music degree and a career as a composer. His fi nal comment on this: "There is no career I would enjoy more than being paid for what I love to do." The Symphony of Rutherford County is pleased that this budding new composer will be in the audience at the upcoming concert. Tickets for the concert are available at the Foundation Box Offi ce or online at foundationshows.org: adults, $15; 18 and under admitted free. For more information, visit rcsymphony.org.
