This coincided with National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The day is set aside for the convenient and responsible means of disposing of both prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications to keep them from getting into the wrong hands and being abused and to educate the general public about the potential for abuse of medication. Each year more than 60,000 children are treated in emergency departments throughout the U.S. due to accidental medication exposure or overdose. Operation Medicine Drop is an effort to reduce the number of accidental poisonings, curb drug abuse and protect our waters from pharmaceutical contamination. Since 2010 more than 20 million doses of medication were safely collected and destroyed through Operation Medicine Drop events in North Carolina. About half way through Saturday's 4-hour event offi cers estimated that over 30 pounds of medications had been collected. For those unable to attend an event such as this there are safe and secure medicine drops in all Rutherford County police departments and the Rutherford County sheriff's offi ce that are available during offi ce hours.
