East Middle School's Battle of the Books team won their spot in Regionals after claiming fi rst place in the RCS Middle Schools Battle of competition in February. The Middle School Battle of the Books program is sponsored by the North Carolina Library Media Association (NCSLMA) who provides the list of books each year. Students read the books and prepare for the competition by answering practice questions. East Middle had two teams who competed in the county-wide competition. The winning team advanced to the regionals. Middle Media Coach Jennie Greenway from East Middle said the team worked really hard but it "just wasn't their day" for the win. The Regional event was held in the Life Enrichment Center at Florence Baptist Church in Forest City as the team gathered at 8:45 a.m. to begin the day. After the competition lunch and snacks were provided. Some teams had picnic lunches under several shade trees on the adjacent church property. "I am very proud of our teams. They worked really hard this year," Greenway said. Other schools vying for the Regional trophy were C.A. Erwin, Bethel, Breward and Rugby.
