The moment was unforgettable. There's joy in the hug. Days later, the mother and daughter are separated for a few weeks and again there is hugging. It's hard to turn loose. The tears fl ow. There's sadness and longing in the good-bye hug. A man holds his young brother in his arms at the funeral of their younger sister. Many minutes pass and the two are still embraced. Two fi rst cousins — just barely a year old — embrace each other so tightly that the hug sends them tumbling to the fl oor. A mother, proud of her son's accomplishment at school pulls the young boy into her arms. Even all A's didn't feel as good to him as the hug his mother gave him. A grandmother sensing the real life struggles in the career world of a granddaughter offers an embrace. Hugs are encouraging. Hugs can do wonderous things. They can cheer you up when you're down and put a smile on your face when you're sad. There are hugs that send you away and hugs that welcome you back and hugs that say "it's great to see you." Hugs are for winners and those that didn't win. They are for the sick and the well, the rich and poor. They are for young people and the not so young people. Hugs often ask questions — "Where have you been?" "What's wrong?" — and they deliver messages — "I'm sorry," "I care. "It's my fault. "I love you." A good warm hug sets a dog's tail wagging and a kitten purring. A long-distance friend once told me, after she embraced a mutual friend, that I should make an effort to truly befriend the person. And when I asked why, she said the friend was very lonely. She sensed that from the hug. She was right. There are good hugs — a total embrace with both arms — and then there are half huggers who use just one arm at a time. And the worst hug of all is the one that comes from the person who just leans up against you and hugs you like she's trying not to hug you. Real hugs make an amazing world of difference. They can make the dullest day seem merrier and the lonely feel less lonely. Nothing can break a language barrier more than a hug. It is universal. Hugs are free. The more you give the more you receive. Spoken words can't touch the surface like a genuine hug. Even to this day, I remember many of the best hugs I've ever received. Among the joys of friendships are the hugs offered, received and returned. No words spoken, just a hug from a friend can change even the toughest of times and remind us we are important.
